hi all I thought that some of you might like these campervans.
the haulage company my son works for imported these from the usa.the middle one didn't sell on ebay, starting price was £2k.the owner is going to do it up himself they are all split screen rolling shell only. the other 2 sold for around £5k each.

What is so special about old VW's? They're narrow, cramped and deadly in a crash, so why do some people regard them as the ultimate? Have these people never driven a Beddy? We Beddy people are keeping the worlds' best kept secret!

I'm with you on this one Martin. I'd be very surprised if many of the owners ever used them to sleep in, let alone every day transport: didn't Jamie Oliver try it and fail miserably? The one good thing about it is at least we can still afford to have Bedfords.

Yes, that's very true. If Beddy's were as popular as the VW, then the prices would have gone through the roof by now.
Incidently, have you seen the recent prices being asked for old Commer PA/PB campers? Ridiculous! They were bad handlers due to their narrow front track, deadly slow, and just as dangerous to be in as a VW in a crash.

Of all the commercial vehicles around in the seventies, the Bedford CF had by far the best handling. I remember borrowing a Transit half truck in the early seventies, and the steering was so bad that it was a job to keep in a straight line. The difference between steering boxes and leaf front springs ( Transit ) against independent front suspension and rack and pinion steering ( Bedford CF ) was just so noticable when driving.

I have to agree with you, the Bedford set up was far superior but I think the Ford had the edge when it came to engines and gearboxes.

I used a VW for over 10 years and use to take up to 4 children camping in it, yes they are small narrow but we managed ok with it and I used it every day. Since getting the Beddy Ive got plenty of room and wouldn't revert back to a VW.

Yes you are quite right, Ford's engines and gearboxes were very good, as was the driving position in the Transit, far more car like than anything else at the time.
Just who thought of that angle for the CF's steering wheel?

When traveling and camping, there is no substitute for space, especially with children on board and VW's just don't have much of it!

VW vans arent about the lifestyle of camping its simply the lifestyle they bring,
my brother in law owns a stunning 72 cross over bay...... probably worth 16k,
vw`s have somthinf that no van will ever have....... scene tax, anything VAG old or new is touched by the scene tax add atleast 20% to anything.
vw created modern motor caravaning they pioneered it, they stuck to there roots with every van from the earliest splitty to the t25, but at the heart of it is the people who save the vans but like everything that grows massive it will implode and that means lots of cheap restored vans, te scenes interest seems to be moving from these old air sookers to the t25 models cos ive watched vans that woulda sold for 2k 4 years ago now selling 8k +.
the commer market has only grown cos of the VW scene knocking new owners out of the price range,
dangerous, smelly , small and ubber retro cool make people look for the same in other makes and models.

There will come a day when Beddy's are "discovered" as an ultra cool van, that will be when the prices start to rise dramatically as a result, just like the ghastly Commer PA/PB has started to do now.
Beddy's are visually attractive, handle well, and are easy to upgrade, unlike the Commer's. Beddy's have had so many different engine/transmissions fitted, some by Vauxhall, others by Holden, yet others by individuals wanting something different.
VW's have VW engines. Commers have Rootes engines, Bedford's have anything that will fit!!! The Beddy is the ultimate modifyible machine - that's why we love them!!!

the worst part of the selkirk show was jack trying to tow the bay in but whipping the tow rope to try and jerk the jeep out the mud :o :o

a wee birdy told me that selkirk showfield is getting a good few bob flung at it plus some shoreing work done at the back of teh main field were it meets the river to help with drainage and some other things that cropped up from a survey by borders council,
the coppers and roads dept were not impressed by the roads last year by all accounts but by the time we left the roads were covered a inch thick for atleast 3 miles either direction with mud from the show field.

Good news about Selkirk then, let's hope it's on next year. I'm not surprised that the police were not happy about it, in fact I'm surprised there's still a field there as most of it escaped under cars.
I'm not convinced a lot of the stall holders were happy at the price increase they had to pay as I think this is a large part of why people attend these shows, looking for spares.
