5speed ZF reversing lamp switch

I need to fit an automatic reversing switch into my ZF box,

where can I get a switch and where does it screw into? the Haynes manual makes reference to it being screwed into the side of the box on the reverse idler shaft but I had a quick looksee at both sides of the box but couldn't see any obvious plugged holes.

Does it need to be fitted to the gearbox?Presumably it's for a reversing light so couldn't you just fit a manual switch to the dash?

Yes it does need to be automatic, not just for the light but also a warning buzzer to alarm the driver (whoever it may be) that they have engaged reverse as it is in the top left-hand of the gate, just where 1st gear is normally!!

Just got this vision of traffic lights changing to green and accelerating hard ......in reverse!

Youll get the hang of it. When selecting firstform neutral, gentle thumb pressure meets resistance before you hit reverse.

Reverse lamps switch for the ZF 4- & 5-speed boxes looks like this -

Switch isn't adjustable and fits on the back of the gearbox -

Remove blanking plate secured by 2 screws in order to install switch.

Finding a switch might be fun ...

Thank you Phil,

having spoken to Adrian it appears that whilst the switch is available off-the-shelf the operating rod for it is not available.

Now I know where the blanking plate is I will take it off and modify it to accept a standard, screw-in switch, using a depth gauge to ascertain the required length of rod.

I'll post my efforts up if you think they may be of help to someone in the future,

Regardless, again Many Thanks.

Em. The 'operating rod' is the selector rod.

If your box has a blanking plate and not a molded reverse light casting then all you need to do is fit the switch.

If you have a casting then this is when you need to be careful as to not allow the swarff to get into the gearbox..
