Stripping front suspension

Sorry, put this in the wrong (How to)section initially .

I have a spare crossmember and suspension from a CF2 that I am wanting to strip and initially retrieve the steering arms, hubs and calipers. Having searched the forums for clues on this I have got myself some M12 threaded rod and a number of nuts and some hefty pieces of drilled bar to make a DIY suspension compressor.(Thanks Phil) From the Haynes manual it would seem I need to remove the shockers first and then compress the spring with the threaded rod. Taking into account the fairly rusty (understatement) condition of the existing suspension, am I better off releasing the ball joints on the steering arms, the top or the bottom wishbones to release the spring? Also are there any other potentially life threatening components I should be watching out for?

Steering rack can be removed first by detaching track rod ends from steering arms then unbolting rack from axle beam. This will give better access to the front of the suspension arms anyway.

Slacken upper wishbone pivot bolt and lower wishbone fulcrum arm end bolts.

Remove shock absorbers then install your M12 compressor in the shock absorber top and bottom mountings.

Wind up the compressor nuts (one to wind up first, second one close behind it as a safety nut) until the upper arm bump rubber lifts off from touching the axle beam.

Detach upper ball joint from steering knuckle then unwind compressor until spring is free to move. That's the potentially dangerous bit done.

Lower wishbone can be detached with steering knuckle attached. Makes things a bit easier when detaching the lower ball joint from the knuckle.

Can be easier to split the nuts on the 4 bolts securing the lower fulcrum arm to the axle beam rather than spanner them off.

Thanks for the advice Phil.

I have currently got both steering knuckles stripped down, calipers, discs, steering arms and hubs are off and I have loosened the steering knuckle ball joint nuts, which are now under load from the spring. I have had trouble with 1 steering arm retaining bolt per side which will not come out (I have not yet applied the blow torch)

The advice about splitting the nuts looks good as they are very rusty

Tighten the steering knuckle ball joint nuts before the tapers decide to let go, when nuts will be difficult to remove.

Only undo the nuts once you're ready to release the knuckle, i.e. when the spring is compressed.

Steering arm bolt will come out ... probably best to leave it in until the knuckle is removed though.

Decided to remove the springs today. The shocks were shot so I cut off the top nuts.

The lower ones came off a bit easier.

Got the suspension compressor made up as per instructions (the exact shape took a couple of attempts). Compressing the spring wasn't as scary as I had thought it would be

Luckily the nuts on the ball joints came off fairly easily so I left the wishbones in place, for the time being.

Springs removed and I've still got all my teeth.

Now to start removing those rusty retaining bolts from the steering arms.
