1978 CF220 2260 Diesel Ice Cream Van

We are taking our CF 1 Ice Cream Van to Parague and back for charity, it is a CF220, that originally had a 1.8 Diedel, but now has an Opel 2260 Diesel Lump.

Its a 1978 model.

I have a couple of questions that you CF experts maybe able to help me with.

Firstly, can the front drums be converted to discs fairly easily, and if so is it worth it ? We are driving through the swiss alps so braking is a fairly serious business.

Also, sound proofing the engine. Being an ice cream van, there is no sound proofing at all on the front bulkhead, or inside the engine bay, is this normal, and is there any pre cut bits I can buy, or do I just go down the scrap yard and make my own.

This van is going on a 3000 mile round trip in 6 days, any advice you maybe able to offer us in preparation of the van would be greatly appreciated. I will attempt to add a pic below.

Many Thanks

Steve

Hi The99ers I have some ice cream stickers - brand new - of the era of your van; would you like me to send you some in the post. a freebie for your charity, you can always sell them on. pm me if you are interested
the engine cowl off the ice cream van that I have my bits and stickers from has insulation fitted as standard so someone must have renewed yours.

I cant help with any advice but i did have a dream the other night about a field of lorries including some Bedford's and in the dream i got out of my Horse box and took pictures of a pink Bedford Ice cream van. Only difference to yours was it was called Jeanie's ices . I think that's a good omen, may i ask what charity you are supporting?

Rich for you, that would be awesome, I will PM you my details.

This van used to a have an ice cream machine in it, I has big holes in the front bulkhead where the drive went through.

There should be boxing in place for the sink unit etc, but this has been removed ready for the passenger seat. I think some tin, a mig welder, some aluminium tape, and maybe a trip to the scrapper to remove as much soundproofing from car bonnets is in order.

We are raising money for two "special" schools, 1 in Somerset, 1 in West Yorkshire. Both schools have hydrotherapy pool projects they have to fund themselves as the local authorities won't pay.

Hi, good luck with the trip.

As far as the disc brake route is concerned, I am currently following this idea.

The main difficulty is sourcing the parts. You will need CF2 discs, calipers and steering knuckles together with CF2 track rod ends as they are a different taper. You also need to be wary of the change over from Imperial to Metric as the majority of the CF2 components seem to be metric. Luckily brake rebuild parts seem to be readily available , see http://www.biggred.co.uk

Someone on the forum has done this before and used modified LDV 400 four pot calipers but I can't find the reference. You may also find some tips on the http://www.buga.com.au/ website.

I have looked for ages until I sourced a CF2 cross-member with the necessary bits (which then have to stripped and refurbished). Parts may be available from Adrian Bailey but if you have deep pockets and short arms then beware. http://www.roverland.eu/

The sages of the forum will probably be able to fill in any blanks I have left.

There is another school of thought that says that well set up drum brakes will be adequate but I leave that them and your conscience!

Engine braking comes easy with a diesel: take your foot off the accelerator.

i've got a recovery truck CF2 350D, got the same Opel Diesel as yours, been on some long day trips saving cars, 500 mile or so and i can tell you the clatter of that engine gets to you, dont get me wrong its a supurb engine, epic torque but it is noisey
mines off the road at the moment and i have vowed to put some sound insulation in it before i use it again, i was thing of getting some Dynamat type stuff, heat resistant foil covered stick on sound deading, dont know how much it cost though and in your case your on a charity run so spending a small fortune preping the Bedford defeats the object so getting and addapting sound blankets from the underside of car bonnets looks like your best option.

I was thinking of maybe making a second skin for the engine in GRP, and maybe filling the void with insulation. Yes being a charity run we are doing everything on a shoestring.

Any other advice anyone can give regarding issues we might face on this van would be really appreciated. Roverland.eu is just down the road to us, so hopefully parts won't be an issue. But at present we are initially facing these problems.

No Brakes (no brake fluid) probably dropped it all somewhere, all wheel cylinders to be replaced, and if there is a master cylinder seal kit, will overhaul that as well.

Smoke, lots and lots of smoke !!! I am told this is probably due to the diesel pump timing. I really hope so, I don't want to be dropping pistons out if I can help it.

Electrical Issues, as an Ice cream van, it looks like its been wired up by mario.

Lots of bits missing, switches of the clocks, mainly the heater button to start the vehicle.
