Off on a jolly.

Hi to all,

Off on another jolly tomorrow to the north Roybridge and Fortwillaim area, get wet and feed the midges for two or three days and revisit Auch-na-carry.
Number one son wants to try the fishing but me I just want to try the beer, or maybe something stronger.
Back on Thursday morning hopefully under our own steam!

Doug.

Hello Doug,
Lovely part of the world, takes us back to our maiden trip, many years ago, in our first Landcruiser. Enjoy.
Highly recommend Avon Skin-So-Soft to repel said midgies.

Off on a jolly.

Hi to all,

Well the jolly was interesting as half up the A9 I blow number two spark plug
and it is a long time since I saw a plug fail so complete and fall apart, in a roadworks ten mile hold up of course.
Struggled on with three cylinders until the next lay by, I was very popular,
But I changed all four spark plugs and had no more problems for the following 250 miles.
The second tank and su pump setup worked a treat to reduce the need to pay highland prices for petrol, so quite a happy bunny really!

Hello Doug,
Glad you had a good time. As you know we run on LPG which makes going north a bit of a problem, hopefully, I shall get my other tank fitted which will give me a 500 mile capacity and hopefully we can do some real wild camping.

Good get out and about now the weather has improved, but your experience shows the importance of having a basic spares kit!

Off on a jolly.

Hi to all,

I am a retired mechanic which helps but I do carry a lot off spares all the time, when the motor is thirty one years old it makes a lot of sense.
Because its not just garage prices as you all know when you roll up in an old Bedford they tend to just point and giggle then say something like do we have a what! Noah was last seen heading that way mate!
The problem with the spark plug cost me in fuel because I was pumping unburnt petrol into number two cylinder when there was nothing there to light it.
But between roadworks and every layby being blocked up with trucks on driving breaks the old bedford had to struggle along for about ten miles on three cylinders at thirty five MPH in third gear, I was not very popular!
So I decided not to return by the A9 and came back by Glencoe Tyndrum Lochearnhead and Crieff, a very good run home on a new set of plugs.

Doug.

It must be something about age! With my first car ( A30 , not a road number, but an Austin ) I always carried spares, especially plugs and points. Perhaps older vehicles needed them changed more frequently, I don't know, but if ever there was a misfire it was always the plugs first! Modern vehicles don't seem to be so heavy on plugs, perhaps that's more to do with electronics, which in themselves, are unreliable!

My no.4 plug is a favourite to clog up and I believe this can be a glitch with the slant engine. I always have a spare

Spark plugs.Hi

Hi ScoobyDoo,

On the slant engines number four plug has always been prone to cause trouble by oiling up or coke whiskering, and it was the first one I took out when I got stopped.
But it was ok even then four is alway a differant colour from the other plugs due to the uneven distribution of fuel through the inlet manifold and the varying temp between the front and the rear of the manifold.

Yes, my no.4 is always a different colour when I service the van in the spring. Amazing how quick I can change it now though
