Steering wheel

Hey guys

Gotta remove my steering wheel for painting. Do they come off easily? Mines a '74 CF1.

Cheers
Ian

they can be a bit tight at times.
remove the center nut and with a rubber mallet hit the back of the steering wheel at various points this will brake the taper ........

Have been busy tidying up my van this week. Roof screws and covers renewed and roof painted, front re undersealed. The joys of being on holiday for a week. Was going to be removing my steering wheel to repaint also. What type of paint are you going to be using? There was a post on here a couple of years ago, someone had done up there wheel, think with Plasti kote. Have searched and searched but do you think I can find it again. Think it was quiet a long post and the steering wheel section was just a small piece in the middle of it. If anyone remembers it, please let me know. Ian, let us know how you get on with the painting.
Cheers Ally

Centre cap

Hi Ally, am just using black 2K. Seems fine on everything else and have used it on steering wheels before no probe.

Does anyone know if the centre cap pops off or unscrews?

Sorry to ask dumb questions but my van is no where near me at the mo so I can't check it and don't want to break anything when I do!

I remember posting about refurbishing my steering wheel using Plastikote and I can't find that post either!
I used the Plastikote because it was what I had lying around but it's excellent stuff for this kind of job not least because it uses an etch primer as the undercoat.
If your steering wheel is in the same condition as mine was then it'll feel sticky to the touch. This is the original plastic/rubber coating disintegrating. It came off very easily with a bit of fine sandpaper leaving a grey base material. Wipe down with spirit/de-greaser, apply primer, two top coats & allow to dry. It will stay tacky for around 24 hours before becoming properly hardened.

Job done.

Thanks for that reply, looks like the post I was looking for. Yes, my wheel is the same condition, feels tacky. MOT next week, then will do the wheel. Thanks again for the reply...
