sticking clutch plate

Hi Iam a new member and i am in need of some guidance as i have a continuing problem of my clutch getting stuck to my flywheel.Thought it was the plate that was in vehicle when i bought it,so searched and finally after eight months found an original borg and beck still boxed brand new plate.dropped gearbox freed old plate ,cleaned flywheel installed new clutchand everything worked perfectly.Vanstood for about 3 months as was working on other areas such as ne side opening roof etc.when i went to start it the clutch was stuck on again .Iwould be grateful for any help or advice that you could give me ,thanks in anticipation of good news LOL Mick

Hi Mick,welcome to the club.Could it be/have been in the past,a build up of rust from condensation after being stood.I've never tried it but I'm sure I've read somewhere that putting it in gear with the clutch depressed then starting the engine & releasing the clutch sharply will loosen it.

thanks for reply,have tried jacking up back axle putting in gear and braking fiercely but it won't budge .Will drop gearbox again to free it,could it a warped flywheel as i have tried pretty much everything else

you need to let the engine heat up before trying to free the cluth plate off like that ollydog.

another way is to tow start the van in gear then with foot all the way down on clutch stamp hard on brake pedal to free it off.

Hi Gethin ,thanks for the imformation will try heating engine up for 15 minutes ans see how it goes,it seems to stick on if i leave the van standing for more than a couple of weeks .Im beggining to think that there is an under lying problem such as clutch cover plate sticking or warped flywheel any further info would be greatly appreciated.The van is a 1972 1.8 slant engine and condition is brill,just the bl dy clutch to sort and i can get on with finishing the paintwork etc.FLEW THROUGH LAST 2 MOTS with no advisories,so you can see why im a little miffed as want to drive it and enjoy once again thanks OLLYDOG

When the clutch was fitted did you apply a liberal amount of copper grease to the splines in the centre?

Hi Mister E,no i didn't ,but clutch was working perfectly after i fitted ,maybe i need to add some grease lol.Will drop box when weather gets a bit warmer and grease splines,hopefully that might sort it out ,thanks for replying it could be as simple as just a little grease once again thanks for your imput

If the splines are not greased the plate will get stuck on them and then the clutch "drags" against the flywheel. I would do it sooner rather than later as the longer you leave it the more siezed the clutch will get on the splines, and it will be a nighmare getting the box out.

you should never put any grease on the splines as it will collect all the dust that builds up thus stopping the spinner plate from disengaging.

you can use the red lube grease that comes with a new clutch unit as this will dissipate in a very short time.

sticking clutch is down to the water in the air reacting with the spinner plate causing a reaction that sticks the plate to the flywheel and or pressure plate.

some plated react much more quickly than others.


there is no cure to sticking plate if its a cheep one as they tend to have loads of cheep bits in them. the older plates that had asbestos in them tended not to stick though...

I dont want to tell anyone to suck eggs but in 16 years workshop experience and many more as an engineer for a very big motor company, I have always brushed a thin layer of copper grease to the splines and never had a problem with dust collecting and causing clutch drag. If the splines are not greased it allows surface rust to form on the input shaft splines and the clutch centre, causing the issue we have here. New cars are also built with a smear of high temperature grease in the input shaft splines for this reason.

Again, I dont want to cause offence by contradicting anyone or alienate myself from other members of the club, I'm just offering the experience and knowledge I have gained as a mechanic and vehicle engineer.
