brakes

just picked up my Glendale motorhome and brought back to Poole from Croydon. had some negative and positive thoughts on the way back. firstly I have to get disc on the front. is that possible? covering approx. 135 miles I used nearly £80 in petrol, engine was popping all the way home. its booked in for a tune up but what should I expect to get mpg from a 2.3 3.5 motorhome. generally I was quite pleased with the motor the steering was spot on no problem at all. the exhaust, I was told it was a sport exhaust but sounded more badly blown exhaust, another thing to check out. if I can get the brakes sorted out I will possibly keep it if not you will see it on here for sale.

to convert to disc's you need the complete front suspension hubs.

the swap is strait forward biggest job is finding s good set......

sounds like the points and condenser need changing on the engine .

you can expect low 20 as for MPG unless you have either a 5speed or overdrive gearbox fitted.

if yours is twin wheeled then the rear axle ratio will drastically reduce the MPG to a low 15 though....
the front can still be converted to disc's but you will need to carry 2 spare wheels though

thanks for your reply. yes it is twin wheels on rear. is there any way I can increase the fuel consumption as I don't think I could live with 15mpg. if there isn't I can see me putting it up for sale.

Its not running right at all - your doing 10mpg at the moment - See what it's like when running correctly

you could try finding a rear axle off a twin wheeled ambulance as they had a good rear axle ..

hi again so much has been happening in the last week, so much we have decided it would be better that we stick to our original plan and keep the motorhome and do it up. we are having it serviced next Monday and we are selling the caravan. we have found out it is a Glendale cf350 major model. we will be on the look out for an overdrive unit so if anyone has one or knows of one going please let me know.

That's excellent news.You know it makes sense,Rodney!
I know absolutely nothing about gearboxes or overdrives so not sure if this is any good.Gethin will be along later hopefully to confirm (or not!)

that gearbox wont fit as its got 3 rods not a turret gear lever.

fitting a 4 speed overdrive gearbox is straight forward as the only other item you need to change is the propshat..

when wiring the overdrive unit up make sure that it cant be openhearted with the reverse gear as it will disintegrate as soon as you start moving backwards......

most of the vauxhall's cars gearboxes will need to be modified as the gearlever is in the wrong place and the ratios will also be wrong............
