Windscreen surround cut points? Hi All,The top and left hand side (as you face the front of the van), windscreen surround is looking a bit sad and I was thinking about replacing it with a section from a donor van. Can anyone tell me at what points it might be best to cut into the frame? Thanks, Nick | Thu 05 Jun 2014 @ 20:05 |

... On the donor van - the least rusty section. On the recipient van - the most rusty section. ---------------------- | Fri 06 Jun 2014 @ 00:31 |

you will need to sleeve the joint to get the strength back though.... | Sat 07 Jun 2014 @ 14:35 |

Thanks for the info. Gethin, would it be possible to cut the entire windscreen surround from just above the bonnet, so it was the whole frame? Or would this also compromise the front end structure? | Sat 07 Jun 2014 @ 18:18 |

cutting that low will mean a lot of work putting the strength back into the structure. if the pillars are in good condition about 6" from bottom then you could cut here and across the roof about 12" from the top of the windscreen. having made sleeves from the offcuts and measuring 100 times before cutting then you should be able to weld it in place, remember though to make small stitching welds no longer that 1" and a gap of 6" between them, let them cool right down before making next set of stitching, this should stop the metal from deforming with heat ........ if the bottom section is bad then try repairing this whilst the A post are still attached but no glass . this will stop any distortion of the a pillars | Mon 09 Jun 2014 @ 19:16 |

That all makes sense and I was expecting something like that. The question is then how bad is my rust? A worst case scenario would mean I had to cut out the whole surround, but I'm hoping it won't come to that! The bit that concerns me is the actual lip that the windscreen rubber sits on. Fortunately the uprights, bottom section, and gutter aren't that bad. The lip though is rusted around and under the rubber at the top a bit, but I don't think it's gone through as there doesn't appear to be any leaks into the cab.It is also rusty in the inner bottom corners just below the windscreen inside the cab on the dash, but even during the last heavy rains those areas didn't feel wet. I'm going to remove the windscreen anyway for painting, etc, how hard would it be to remove the rust from the lip and cut away sections of the lip only and replace them? Thanks for your time on this Gethin, I've got quite a lot of bodywork related questions coming up and it's really good to know which routes to go down before I source replacement sections. | Mon 09 Jun 2014 @ 20:09 |
