Side facing seat passengers. What is the law for passengers riding on a side facing seat?Can a passenger legally ride on a side facing seat? |

If the car was manufactured like that, then yes. It would not be legal in a new car now (ruled out some time in the late 80's I think from memory...?) I regularly carry a full compliment of passengers in the van on the side facing seats. Yes there is some risk for safety, but frankly a 1970's car is so bad for front crash performance anyway, the lack of a seatbelt isn't going to make much difference in a high speed crash... The front impact zone of the van is about 5 inches away from the drivers feet so good luck with those pedals accelerating rearwards.... (sorry for the morbid tone). ---------------------- |

do not fit seatbelts to side facing seats as they will cause more harm to the body that not having them. there is no law regarding side or rear facing seats and even forward facing seats if no seatbelts where fitted as standard. any new seatbelts fitted to seats where thas not fitted before need to be done to regs. and will need testing as another test by DVSA (new name for vosa) this will cost you as not all testing stations are allowed to carry out this test, the anchor point must have plates fitted both sides of the floor and also if your using the 3 point belt the top anchor point must also be attached to metal which is attached to the floor again by plates both sides, |

old van crash performance Thanks for the replies :- )I saw a residual 'LDV Convoy (400)' crash test vehicle circa 1998. It passed the regulation no problem. It's structural longmembers (chassis rails) had remained virtually unchanged since the earlier Sherpa, & I guess the CF longmembers are similar. That Beauty was a little longer in the nose than the Bedford CF. So I agree that the same test, if performed on a CF, would maybe flatten the front upto the windscreen. But the CF is just too cool to crash into a concrete block. |
