Progress

Back in April 2014 I bought a CF Dormobile with the intention of doing it up. Unfortunately I'm a bit stubborn and although it was way more of a wreck than I first thought I've made it my mission to make it great again. I love everything about it and have a goal to have it back on the road next summer in great condition. I've taken loads of photos of the whole process and thought I'd show you guys a bit of what's been happening. This is when I first got it:

Now this has happened, I've cut out all the rust I can find, right back to the chassis and am slowly fabricating repair sections that I don't have spares for.

This is the wheel arch, I still need to make a repair section for the whole in the middle where it meets the inner floor section (which also needs repairs!), and I'll fabricate a new lip for the arch edge to join to the wing and arch rocker.

Also made new sections for the front engine bay floor out of the old steps:

So, finally a chance to do a bit more stuff to the beast!

Decided that it was now time to get to grips with a bit of welding, needed to mess about with the setup and teach myself a bit of welding technique, had a bit of practice, and then went for it! Kept making schoolboy errors but managed to squeeze a few decent bits of fixing out of it!

This was the first effort, welded the edge of my engine bay floor repair section:

Then welded it into place, rushed it a bit out of excitement at actually repairing something and it got a bit too hot, but salvaged it after a bit of messing around ,and a few holes!!!!

Bit of filler to tidy it up

Then sanded and painted, in one point where the flat section meets the arch curve the metal kept blowing through so I had to build it with weld and fill it a bit, but should be strong enough to last a while.

and welded in the front cross member support, headlight assembly, and tidied up the other chassis leg

Started to get a bit tired of bodywork stuff so fixed some other bits. Fitted new brake hoses to the front and replaced the tie rod ends and boots.

Stripped the dash and replaced the dials with older style ones, I like how uncluttered it now looks with less markings

Also managed to get this great 50's Vauxhall radio which I plan to have the internals modernised so I can get great sound out of it.

Managed to get the chance to do some more stuff, so had a go at my leaky master cylinder.

In little bits!

Reconditioned with service kit, the circlips were a nightmare to get out!

Home made bench bleed kit and it's in, no more leaks so far!

Also needed to start getting on with more of the bodywork, so carried on with the front end.

Repaired the other side of the engine bay floor.

Re-instated the headlight support section.

and then the front chassis cross member

Then I set to work on the step and A pillar.

Welded in lower repair section for the step front panel and a new lip for the rocker arch to fix to.

Then fixed up the bottom of the A pillar where it also meets the rocker.

Time to tackle one of the jobs I'd been least looking forward to, repairing the inner arch lip.

Fabricated some new sections out of my old front doors, the curve on the inner section of the door was the perfect curve so worked out a treat!

Then welded in two small sections, one along the top of the arch, and one where the top meets the step front, and then the rear section of lip.

Finally fitted the front section too.

I'm finally starting to feel like I'm getting somewhere with the van, and almost got to my first goal of sorting out the front end. Thought it would be a good idea at this stage to test fit all the other front panels to make sure everything was lining up nicely. It was nice to finally see it's face again, and not just a grey skull!

This is the NS from section.

And this is the rest!

Hopefully once the front is complete i'm hoping that tie back won't be quite as time consuming, it feels like there is still so much to do before I even get started on the interior that I'm trying not to even think about it yet!!!!!

I have to cut a lot of the roof off to replace ruined gutter sections and rear top corners, and repair lumps of the windscreen surround, so I'll keep double checking everything to check fit. I'm very tempted to try and find some NOS front doors so I don't have to try and strip the other ones I've got, but not enough cash for that currently (and a pair never seems to come up ever!).

Had the chance to sort the gaping hole in my NS inner arch the other day, cut away the rotten section of cab floor, and then the arch underneath. This is the removed bad section and my repair section (made from a bit more of the old door!). It took me an entire morning trying to get it that shape on a vice and anvil!!!

Area ready for repair!

Finally fixed up and water tight once more!

Almost ready to tackle all the OS arch and step section, hopefully will be a bit quicker as the arch does't have a massive hole in it!
