Engine work.

Hi to all,

I have got some engine work to do over the next few weeks to try to produce a useable 2.3 slant four that will be a stand in until something better can be found, and by better I mean probably a younger lower mileage engine.
There have been quite a few around on e-bay but just at the moment none to be found but I am sure one will show up in the coming weeks.

Engine for a Landcruiser.

Hi to all,

Now that I have the spares needed I have enough to keep me busy even if the rain keeps on falling with the engine work inside, but if it should stop falling I can get my roof recovering job finished.
So enough work going on to keep me out of the wife's feet for the next six weeks at least!

Jason's engine.

Hi to all,

Because it turn wet and windy today I made a start to striping off the parts I need from the 1.8 slant engine to check and clean them before using them on the 2.3 that will eventually be dropped into his Bedford.
With the forecast being for more rain my outside jobs will have to wait but at least it is moving things along, and by the end of this month the engine could be in and running and bringing the Bedford bus back from the dead.

Engine progress.

Hi to all,

I think I have all the bits I need off of the 1.8 engine so it has been reloaded into Jason's trailer, it would have been nice if someone had drained off the engine oil before it reached me, tends to be a bit messy!
I have a bit of work still to do to the 2.3 that is going into Jason's Bedford but it is coming along, fuel lift pump was jiggered so I had to fit one I had spare and had to replace one of the inlet manifold studs before I could fit the manifold onto the engine.
But head is on cam-box is on exhaust and inlet manifold are in place, water pump and by-pass pipe are fitted along with oil pump and distributor and all timed up with belt in place, so we are getting there.

engine work.

Hi to all,

Due to the weather with the endless rain it was a case of back to the shed and get on with Jason's 2.3 engine and I have now taken it about as far as I can before fitting it into the engine bay and giving it some sparks and fuel.
I will rig up a sparks test tomorrow so that I know I have low and high tension sparks in all the right places but from there on it needs to be in place.
It was fitted with the smaller car clutch plate and cover plate so they had to be replaced with a nine and a quarter inch one which should be on the 2.3 slant.
So the engine is now complete and ready to be delivered, all we need is for it to stop raining!

Soft ground.

Hi to all,

As you can imagine with all this rain the ground around my workshop shed is water logged and very soft so the sack barrow means of transport from shed to trailer is impossible, so today I took delivery of a four wheeled gardening trolley with blow up wheel barrow type tyres, I just hope it will be strong enough to take the Bedford engine.
I will have to beef it up a bit with some 1/2 inch boards but it will make the transporting from shed to trailer a lot easier "tomorrow I will find out".

New trolley.

Hi to all,

My new four wheel trolley arrived and I have built it up from its flat pack form its size strength and height should make it easier to move the completed engine from workshop to waiting trailer.
I will have to make some kind of ramp because there is two steps at the gate but for now I am still waiting for the rain to give us a break!

Advantage frost.

Hi to all,

With a hard frost again this morning it was time to move that engine out to the trailer while the ground was frozen so that my engine trolley did not sink into the mud, and I have got that done loaded and ready to be collected.
Next part of the job will be to transport it out to where Jason's Bedford is stored and make a start to fitting it into the van, his friend has a forklift so that will be a great help.
Hopefully by that time the weather will have dried up a bit, frost we can work with but this endless rain is just damaging and flooding everything.

Jason's Landcruiser.

Hi to all,

Next weekend we hope to be able to fit the completed 2.3 engine into that Bedford Land-cruiser the only thing that seems to be missing are the belhousing
bolts, I hope to find a couple in some of my boxes just to hold everything in place until the rest can be found.
On the up side we seem to have a guy with a fork-lift which will make an excellent engine crane and should a lot time and effort.

Next job.

Hi to all,

I have a spare crankshaft among my many parts so I have decided to have it reground polished and balanced for my own Bedford engine, to be fitted sometime over the next twelve or so months along with an upgraded oil pump.
But before that I do have an engine to fit for Jason's Land-cruiser and a gearbox to fit for Brain McDonald so the start of a very busy new year.
But right now I would be happy to get the chance to finish recovering my old Bedford's roof and stopping any more drips and leaks.

Saturday.

Hi to all,

Saturday's engine installation will be so much easier if the weather is kind to us inside that open hay shed, just have to be careful not to end up with a chicken squeezed into the clutch housing!

Engine fitting day.

Hi to all,

Tomorrow we should manage to get Jason's Land-cruiser engine into place providing we are able to find the missing bits in his lockup before we start the job, let's hope there not still in Ireland!
With all the spare parts he has bought I think we should find what we are short of, if not it will mean another delay in getting this Bedford back on the road.

Poor progress.

Hi to all,

Today's engine fitting program did not go as well as it should have with broken engine mountings the limited success of using a forklift teli-hoist instead of an engine hoist and working away from my own place with the limited amount of tools you can take with you.
But on the up side the engine is in the engine bay and with more gentle jacking and levelling between engine and gearbox progress should be smoother tomorrow with the discovery of some suitable bel-housing bolts which will make life easier, I hope!
These are days of short daylight and being inside out of the weather is good but the lighting is poor is I need to find some battery lighting for tomorrow it does help if you can see what your doing.

Engine work.

Hi to all,

With the engine now sitting in place at the correct angel for the mounts our next problem seems to be with the gearbox input shaft or the clutch centre plate
so the gearbox will have to be backed off an inch or so to allow for the enough movement to engage to two properly.
A bit of a draw back for getting the job finished but in some of these old motors with worn or soft mountings that have seen better days getting everything to stay where it should can be difficult.
As we are finding out, Jason will be glad that this is a fixed price job!

Weather and transport.

Hi to all,

Jason's engine work was called off today partly because of the weather and the amount of tools and equipment we would have to transfer from one car to another
But tomorrow my car will be free to make things easier and we will get a longer time at the job to iron out some of the wrinkles that are slowing us down.

Working with old parts.

Hi to all,

The older parts of this Bedford does not like the newer parts being fitted, mainly daft thinks you don't notice in the rush to get this engine into the engine bay.
The first was that the thrust race had moved forward tilted and jammed, managed to put that right without separating engine and gearbox and almost reached a perfect mating of the two faces, but not quite.
In my search for the reason I found an extra engine dowel which had on place to go in the older gearbox belhousing, so that will have to be removed before the two faces can mate flush.
The dowel is holding the engine out by about three mm, just one of the differences you can be faced with when you try to match old and new parts.

The next stage.

Hi to all,

I have to start thinking about the next stage now that the engine is in place
and that means battery power fuel and starter wiring, some of the wiring seems to be still in place if still usable so continuity tests will need to be done.
Then I need to check the state of the fuse box to make sure it is still in a useable state, a lot of the electric's have been left exposed to the weather for a long time.

I know that feeling.

Hi Jim,

If anything can go wrong it will, yes I do know that feeling and it does, but if it was easy everybody would be doing it.
But Jason must have wanted a challenge when he bought these old Bedford's and this one is certainly challenging me but I don't give up easily.
