Hi to all,

Having to alter one of the engine mounts because both mounts fitted were for the same side of the engine which meant one was about an inch out of line with the carrier bracket on the main cross-member.
Just one of the things that can slow down your progress on a job of many parts
like this is, I now have a starter motor but so far I have not been able to find the bolts that should somewhere in the van.
There seems to be a shortage of bolts that have to thread into the engine or bell-housing, the parts that are held in place with nut and bolt are easily overcome from my own stock.
These might not seem like much but they do slow down the job while you try to find a way around them!

Wiring and cables.

Hi to all,

I hope to get to some wiring and cable attachments done on this visit, if there is a battery to put in place I will able find out what power I have at the fuse box and if it is going to where it should be like Ign. coil, and distributor.

Jason's rush.

Hi to all,

Because of the amount of work still to be done on Jason's Bedford I have compiled a list just to show how much work still needs to be done before he can start to think about an MOT, which is a good way of bringing some reality to the job.
It also gives me a check list of what to prioritise once the engine's electric's and fuel supplies are in place.

A more producive day.

Hi to all,

A wee bit more productive today at Jason's Bedford finally got that engine mount to fit the right way around and the bell-crank and clutch cable fitted and working, distributor cap rotor and leads in place and the fuel pump ready.
Got a battery in to place to gain voltage at the starter coil and points, once we get two starter bolts and some petrol we should be ready to make some noise.

Electric's checkover.

Hi to all,

Took some time today to have a look over the wiring on Jason's Bedford and it has been butchered all the connections to the lights have been cut when the lights were taken off, managed to trace the alternator and starter looms but the rest is a bigger job with all the bulb connectors missing.
No feed to the Ign. and dash board and the fuse box looks a bit grotty and the light wiring to the nearside front seems to be missing, so a lot of new wiring needed.

Repair and make up.

Hi to all,

Managed to do some front lower panel repairs so that we can refit the panels on Jason's Bedford, then it was time to make up some fuel line connections ready to be fitted on the next visit.
I might have solved the starter bolt problem by a bit of rethreading on very close metric seventeen mm bolts then trying them out on an old belhousing, and they seem to do the job but I will add a drop of nut-lock to the threads just to be safe.
And if all that works out it will be time to find out why there is on power going to the Ign. switch, I would think the amount of cut wires could have a lot to do with that.

Connecting up.

Hi to all,

Today was a case of connecting the choke and throttle cables but the new bolts for the starter motor turned out to be just too short for the job, have to think again on that one!
But did manage to do a bit of the wiring to the alternator and starter which brought power to the dashboard so I was able to check that I had power from switch to starter solenoid but I seem to be short of an engine earth strap so I will have to make one up and fit that.
Topped up the engine oil and repaired part of the fuel line but a low battery and the lack of an earth strap brought the job to a halt for now, next visit should be a bit more interesting.

Electric's

Hi to all,

Looking over Jason's wiring I think maybe I should set him up with a starting handle but a decent battery should and would make a difference, whoever dismantled this motor had a good pair of snips and has went off with some very important connections and sockets.
If we are to be ready for an MOT in March I had better buy a magic wand!

Hi to all,

Tomorrow I will get a bit more work done on Jason's Land-cruiser and once all the engine connections are checked and tested it will be time to start checking and listing other parts that are going to be needed, such as brake cylinders and shoes or steering joints and tyres.
So tomorrow I hope to have a list of what parts need replacing working our way around the van that way I can get a better idea of how much more time it will take to get this van ready for MOT.
The inside furniture can wait until the van is drivable, my check list is still too long, out of 35 checks and repairs we have covered less than half of them and that is a bit too slow for Jason's timetable.

Waiting on spare parts.

Hi to all,

I made a short visit out to Jason's Bedford this morning and managed to get a bit more wiring sorted out and reconnected and had the engine turning over on the starter, and even got some life out of the hazard warning lights on the dashboard.
However the ign.coil failed to put out any high tension life to the distributor ok on the low tension side with a spark at the points but that was all, set about getting the back wheels off which was easier said than done because of rusted wheel nuts, left them soaking in oil.
Checked the handbrake and it seems to be working but I need to get the brake drums off and see what we have to work with so left the rear end up on axle stands.
It looks like Jason will need four tyres they are on the limit so more money needed Jason.

Doug Joyce is Gem

Hello everyone!
I must get the website up for Edward the Bedford so you can see the photos...
My contribution recently was trying to put 1 nut on and losing it, then seeing how I could fix the skylight before putting my head through it and wrecking it!
As you will see I'm "next to useless" and I need to "get my finger out" (2 quotes my Dad, who was a mechanic, used to say to me!)
If, sorry, when this bedford goes back on the road all credit will be due to Doug who has been persistent and super helpful.

Non breaking jobs.

Hi to all,

The work I hope to get Jason wired into in the near future will have no risk of breakages, but might mean getting very dirty and learning a few colourful words because these old Bedford's have a way of teaching you what looks simple and easy never is.

The long lost starter bolts.

Hi to all,

I have managed to find two threaded studs that will fit and thread into the bel-housing in place of the missing starter bolts, which will let me get that starter finally fitted and secure and if we have a working coil who knows we might be able to fire the old beast up for the first time.

Oil switch.

Hi Jim,

I found that the Bedford CF used the same oil pressure switch as a Fordson Dextra tractor, same thread screwed right into place perfect!

Back to the landcruiser

Hi to all,

Had a weekend off of the Land-cruiser due to other work waiting to be done and members of the family being taken into hospital for tests, (still waiting for results) but tomorrow I will get another few hours work done all being well.
Time is short and there is a lot still to be done but if I can get the mechanical side of things done it then looks like a sparks will have to be found to do a lot of rewiring.

Fordson oil switch.

Hi bluebedouin,

The Fordson switch I found that fitted my 1980 2.3 engine block is 221912830287,
some older blocks had a finer thread with a smaller bore but that is the one I have fitted to my engine block.

Forward movement.

Hi to all,

At todays visit to the Land-cruiser we moved things along a bit with the new coil in place and putting sparks out to all the right places and the starter motor bolted into place we then turned our attention to the suspension steering and shock absorbers while striping and checking the brakes.
The rear shocks need to be replaced but we have a set that can be used, on our next visit we can get the brake lines and hoses done and get some brake fluid pumped through the system, and if we have enough battery power it would be good to fire up that engine.
Fitted four new tyres on wheels today as we moved around the brake and hubs, we now have enough wiring loom sections to hopefully get some lights working, so things are going slowly in the right direction.

Shocking.

Hi to all,

During our examination we found the rear shock absorbers were not a matching pair and one was leaking, but I have a spare pair hanging up in my shed so they will be used as replacements next weekend.
But some kind soul had replaced all the brake wheel cylinders so they were check for being free and the brake shoes look to be in good shape so it would seem that at some point in time someone was in the proses of do this one Bedford up.
Nearly all the brake pipes have been replaced which is another sign of their intensions to put the van on the road, the chassis and underside seem to be in good order and we now have an exhaust system to be fitted.
