Brakes and earth straps.

Hi to all,

This week should be about the brakes and brake pipes and getting the system filled and bled now that we know all the wheel cylinders and shoes are in good working order.
I have two rear shock-absorbers looked out to replace the old ones on the van and an earth strap made up and ready to fit, if we can muster enough battery power we can try to get some life out of the engine.

Progress.

Hi to all,

Still lacking enough battery power to get that engine spinning over like it should so time to invest in a new heavy duty one I think, got a few things moved on today like the rear shock absorbers have been replaced and a new earth strap fitted.
Got the brake pipes refitted and filled and bled the system, got a great pedal and the new wheels and tyres are now on, the exhaust system is next once we get a pipe to manifold sealing ring and a few hangers fitted.
The dash board electric's seem to have been messed about with so we might need an auto sparky to take a look at that but next week we should have the front lights ready to fit and wire up and refit the missing front panels.
So we are getting there slowly!

Turning over too slowly.

Hi to all,

The Land-cruiser starter seems to turn the engine over too slowly to get it started, might have to add an earth strap back at the battery or at least make sure the connections are cleaned up, even with jump leads connected the starter did not speed up.
Taking some of the load off of the engine might help as well, unplugging the alternator and taking off the belt can make quite a difference to turning speed.
But first we need that exhaust system fitted, starting an engine in a straw filled barn with out an exhaust could have scary results!

Hello Doug.
Sound like you have enough amps available with the jump pack attached. Try using a jumper lead from the battery earth straight to the starter motor body or bolts to ensure the starter/engine has a good earth. If still slow and all connections appear clean and tight and you cant feel any hot spots on the positive cables after cranking then could be a starter motor problem. Dirty commutator, failing field windings, weak tension on the brushes, poor solenoid bridging etc. Try another starter you trust if available.

Regards Andy

Slow turn over.

Hi Beigebengy,

The state of this Bedford's bodywork with rusty steel and a fiberglass body I am sure it is an earth problem mainly but the battery came with the campervan and does charge up but drops very fast, so it maybe a part of the problem as well.

Land-cruiser gremlins.

Hi to all,

Todays job was mainly to get the exhaust front pipe fitted with a new sealing ring and fit the made up fuel line to the pump and mate it up to the pipe from the fuel tank, then get the cut-out front panels lined up and drilled ready for refitting.
Removed the old exhaust system so that we could salvage the rear section, got the new battery fitted and had that old engine spinning over nicely and got it to fire, only to find no more fuel in the tank.
So dribbled some fuel into the carb along with a short squirt of easy-start and got it to fire again but then the replacement second-hand starter motor died a smoky death.
So next job was to remove the starter-motor and test it, solenoid working well but that was all so brought it home to strip and check and hopefully repair, we shall see what has happened tomorrow.

Starter motor.

Hi to all,

Having tested and striped down the starter motor I found pole wiring damage and a very worn and damaged commutater, but from my spares cupboard of old and some would say scrap parts I found a body off of a Bedford starter.
So we have a working starter motor checked and tested, if when you buy a second-hand electrical part on e-bay or the like you must test it this one soldasgood working part and I did have some doubts when it lacked speed to turn the engine.

Fuel and sparks.

Hi to all,

After priming up some petrol into the carb and refitting the repaired starter motor the engine ran for about 60 seconds, just long enough to click the distributor into a perfect timing position and the engine ran smoothly all be it for a short time because it ran out of fuel.
So pleased with that on the next visit I will run the engine off of a separate supply through an electric pump until the system is primed.
Sounded good and the oil pressure came up quickly and that new battery packs a good punch, just what we needed!

Hi to all,

Just checking through what still needs to be done before Jason's Land-cruiser can be driven on a short test drive, a sparky I know is giving the wiring the once over on Friday so by Sunday I should be able to put the front panels back into place and fit the radiator and hoses.
The exhaust still has to be finished by adding the rear section and some hangers, once that is done we need to check the gearbox oil level and the diff level and by that time it should be able to take a short test drive around the farm just to check that all is well. (progress)!

Land-cruiser set backs.

Hi to all,

Todays visit to Jason's Bedford was to fit the radiator and hoses so that it could be filled with water, then once the fuel had came through from the tank get it ran up to temp. and get the timing and carb. set spot on.
The first set back was whoever replaced the front cross-member had not replaced the two brackets that hold the radiator in place, so for now it is held in place with two sets of vise-grips.
So checked the fuel line at the tank end and all was well and once petrol was primed using an electric SU pump the engine was fired into life, but on petrol coming up through the mechanical fuel pump.
So fuel pump off and back to the workshop for a check to see what the problem is and a lot of movement with very little pump, I will have to find another one or re-con this one.

Fuel pump.

Hi to all,

I have managed to find another fuel pump which will make it quick and easy and get us out of trouble, well let's hope so anyway.
Might have to change the fuel connections and do a bit of re-routeing with the fuel lines but it will be worth it if it solves the problem.

Gave the Landcruiser another visit.

Hi to all,

Took out the replacement fuel lift pump today to Jason's Bedford and after a bit of priming up with fuel using the electric pump she now runs and starts as she should, but after a twenty minute run at tick-over with the pressure cap on the radiator she sprang a water leak from around the water pump area.
So that is the next problem to be solved, see what I can find on Sunday!

Problem found.

Hi to all,

On my visit to Jason's Bedford today I have found the leak which was cured with a new water pump gasket and some gasket sealer, so all back together and tested when ran up to temp. all was well.
Some signs of the sparky having been there with wiring moved and checked but no new work done as yet, I should maybe now stay away and let him work his magic.

Mechanically.

Hi to all,

Apart from the welding in to place of the front panels the jobs left on Jason's Bedford he will manage himself like the gear oil level check and the diff oil level, exhaust hangers and rear section pipe to be fitted.
Once the sparky has done his work it should ready for an MOT test and Jason's plans for the inside to be worked out.
The welding work cannot be done in a straw filled barn so it can wait until it can be driven outside.

Jason's Bedford.

Hi to all,

Since I am waiting on the Corsa cylinder head to come back from the machine shop I thought I would take a quick trip out to Jason's Bedford, some of the electrical work has been done but the battery was flat so removed that and brought it home to be charged.
Removed part of the front cross-member panel so that bolt holes can be relined ready for welding into place, found and fitted the air cleaner and filter housing and air intake hose to the carb.
Hope that will keep out most of the straw and dust, better than just an old plastic bag wrapped around the carb, once the exhaust is hung and clamped together it can be driven outside and welded up and brackets fitted to carry the radiator.

Land-cruiser.

Hi to all,

Jason's Land-cruiser has now got an exhaust system and after a small clutch adjustment we were able to move it under its own power, albeit just to drive it out reveres it and turn it round to get better access to the back door.
She is running well sounds like a good engine and the gearbox seems to work ok and we have brakes so just a bit of welding and the electric's to sort out and it could go for an MOT, so progress!

Trying to move Edward forward.

Hi to all,

Just that bit of welding to get done and all the gear is loaded into my Bedford, all I am short of is the time to get out there and put that front back together, have not heard if Jason has been out getting work done or out there or not but I don't want the job to run out of steam.

Thanks Doug.... Where do the weeks go... We are nearly there but I'm afraid I've done nothing! Over in NI a couple of times due to family bereavement. Out doing 2 major cycle sportives, ran a choir came for 45 kids last weekend. And this weekend I'm at the Edinburgh Whisky Stramash sampling about 20 different whiskies!!!

The poor Bedford is getting neglected. Will get out this Sat. If only it was outside my house...
