Still catching drips.

Hi to all,

Country farm roads are not good for old Bedford's like mine that is what set all this leaking and dripping water off, still trying to find the points of entry but hope that by doing the whole roof area I will win the battle.
All I need is one good dry day to get it finished, at the moment that seems to be a big ask.

Presumably from all the movement,Doug.Would something like this work? " Super-flex remains flexible
and elastic to allow for movement of the substrate forming a long-life protective coating for weatherproofing"

Roof joints.

Hi bluebedouin,

At the moment I am in the process of recovering the whole roof and side seams with tar back lengths of flash band, weather has stopped that work for now but it gets melted onto the roof with a heat gun which should give me a new roof in effect.

The rain has stopped.

Hi to all,

At last the rain has stopped and the frost has kicked in, season normal and of cause the drips have stopped inside the old Bedford, so all I needed was frost to cure the problem.
Over the next few nights the weather man says it will drop down to 12c below freezing and the snow we have will be added to, so fresh snow onto a frozen base could mean it will be around for a while, that I can work with!

Frost.

Hi Jim,

This is to be the coldest night so far this winter and that will stop all the drips for sure, it still does not let me get on with the roof work.
But on a brighter note next weekend I get to fit the completed 2.3 engine into Jason's Bedford Land-cruiser, let's hope it all goes well!

Front roof light .

Hi to all,

Looks like the front roof-light/skylight will have to be totally sealed over due to a leak somewhere around its base frame that is still able to let in some water, only a few drips but a few too many!

Skylight.

Hi Jim,

Having recovered the whole roof I have cured three out of the four drips that were causing a problem, I am looking at the possible idea of making a hood which will cover the skylight on three sides but is high enough to allow it to still be opened and let some light into the camper.

skylight.

Hi Jim,

The skylight would not be totally covered over the hood wound act as a rain shield still allowing some light in and still being able to be opened 3or4 inches to allow air into the van.
It would be made of light weight plastic and be shaped into the roof, but before doing this I am going to totally cover over the skylight to make sure that by doing this I will stop any water getting in.
Taking the skylight out is a lot of work for just one small drip of water so I think it is worth a try.

I have a similar problem with leaks in the skylight over the cab bed. My solution was to fit a larger skylight cover over the existing light. This allows it open, allows in light and means the rail is deflected way from the leaky seals!

This plus liberal application of rubber paint has eliminated the drips.

The hood.

Hi Tomjones,

My idea is very close to that but much cheaper a clear plastic storage box cut to make a slopped hood still allowing in the light and enough room for the skylight to be opened attached to the roof covering the base of the skylight.
Should be quite aerodynamic and hardly seen from the ground, if it works I will let you know.

So far so good.

Hi to all,

The roof and roof space vents seem to have cured that drip problem and having that air flow through the roof space has cured that musty damp smell I wanted rid of over the winter months.
But the rain that is now heading our way will test just how successful all the work has been.
