When I first saw it I thought of something out of Doctor Who. The two guys in the blue cherry picker in the first picture gives an indication of the size. It's actually the UK side of the UK - Netherlands interconnector. The UK imports electricity from the Netherlands (okay, it can go the otherway too but as the UK is short on generating capability it's nearly always from the Netherlands) at 450,000V DC. These inverters convert in to AC and then it goes through transformers to convert it to 400,000V AC for distibution over the National Grid. ---------------------- | Wed 14 Jun 2017 @ 20:19 |

Nope, no USB I'm not sure of the safety distance on DC at 450Kv. The inverter units were isolated when we worked on them as we had to disconnect them. The AC side of things, the nearest you can get to live 400,000V is 3.1m Anything less than that and it can arc over and kill you In practice you keep further away than 3.1m or preferably isolate the equipment and work 'dead'. ---------------------- | Thu 15 Jun 2017 @ 21:17 |
