Bedford CF where to start

Hello. I've had my Bedford CF sitting on the drive doing nothing for a couple of years now and would like to start a restoration project. Can anyone recommend a good starter book. I have no knowledge of cars and no experience of car restoration. The engine has been looked at and sorted and I'm considering a local company for welding and respray. Happy to get my hands dirty but what sort of jobs are practical for a novice to take on. Was thinking I could do more of the interior work but don't even know how to sort the rusty metal curtain runners......

Off the road.

Hi,

I have had a number of Bedford's over the years my workshop van was a Bedford CF and the one I have now is an old Pioneer bodied campervan ,,I bought eleven years ago.
And like yours it was a bit of a challenge in fact they all are but I have enjoyed bringing it back to life and travelling during the summer season but it is now off the road for the winter.
And I am still finding work needing done so take your time and do the easy jobs, buy yourself a workshop manual on line, having been a mechanic I have worked on them in the past and still rebuild engine's and gearboxes for them.
So you are in the right place for getting the help he may need.

Thank you. I have spoken to a bodywork company who gave me a general estimates £4-8k for welding and respray (just a chat on the phone, unseen). I am very conscious of the fact that the resale value is nothing like that of a VW and whilst I'm wanting to make good for myself and not to sell or to make a profit, I still think it's something I need to be conscious of. The last time I drove, it was dark and raining, neither the windscreen wipers or the lights were effective (even on beam). Am I being unrealistic about that? Should I remain true to the genuine van and accept that perhaps winter night driving isn't a thing or do these things on my van just need tweaking and looking at?

I'll certainly look for a manual

It is a lot of work.

llHi,

Halogen bulbs can be fitted quite easily which is an improvement at a low cost, you can also get a two speed wiper motor, some of the guys have went for LED lighting.
Bodywork and respraying is always a high cost mainly because of the amount of prep work which takes a lot of time, the thing that would make my mind up would be the amount of welding that was needed.
It took me a long time to make my Bedford a usable and reliable vehicle and a lot of work.

Thanks for those pointers - will definitely look into the wipers and lights.

Re the welding - what would come into play in terms of you making your mind up? What would make it worth the effort and what would not? The base of the back doors need definite welding - cutting out and a new bit put in, there is also some poor filling done around the wheel arches and when you lift up the back seats you can see a small amount of daylight near the floor which is where two panels look to join on the outside, again which has been poorly filled. The rest of it looks like general pitting over the body and bits of rust around the front windscreen and roof. But as I've said, I'm no expert.

Welding work.

Hi,

The rust and holes you mention are all in places common to that problem on older Bedford's mine included and are easily repaired, of the areas around the windscreen would be my main concern, but you don't say what like the chassis and door pillars are like or the door steps.
Check the inner front wings and front door A pillars where they join the top of the inner wing panel, if all that is quite sound all the rest is cosmetic and repairable.

Owning a beddy gives you the chance to learn many new skills. What year is your van, presuming it's a camper;which conversion?
If you pm me your address & cover postage cost I can send you a Haynes manual that covers 1969 - 1987.
Not sure where exactly you are in Lancs but there will be evening classes in welding that will be a lot cheaper than 4 to 8 grand!

That is very kind of you bluebedouin. I now have a Hanes manual but really appreciate the kind offer.
So I have a Bedford CF Freeway like the one in the image - I assume it's a CF2..... I'll certainly check out welding although have to say the idea terrifies me!!

Bedford Cf.

Hi,

If your Bedford is like the one in the picture it will be a CF1 the same as the first one I owned I had back in the late 70's, but yours will look like that when your finished the work, just take your time.
