want to get going

Hi there,
first a bit about us, we have three delightful:? children, one greyhound, and some chickens, we love steam rallies/ museums and our Austin fg lorry, his christmas pressie last year, my turn now.
we are looking for an older(pre 1980)campervan (not a VW:B).as we mostly want it for long days or short weekends number of berths is not that important, mind you, the dog takes alot of floor space.
would love to hear from anyone, specially in our area.
are there any camper rallies, soon? where public are welcome.
also as i am pretty short in the height area (1/2" short of 5'), are there any campers to avoid?
also we are not looking for a luton bodied camper.
are we crazy?
vicky & paul

Hi Skippy and welcome. I can answer one of your questions for you - camper meetings coming up.
The Bedford Gathering takes place over the Bank Holiday weekend - just 5 weeks away. If you have got yourself a van by that tme, book in - http://www.bedfordgathering.com - and join us on the display field on Saturday and Sunday.
If you haven't got a van you are welcome to attend on the Sunday as a visitor, but sadly we will charge you an entry fee, however either way you will be able to meet with the Bedheads who will be there. Hopefully look forward to seeing you there.

As for your other questions - the guys and gals who have vans can answer them better than I - I only help to organise the BG!
Allan

Hi Vicky and Paul

Don't disregard the coachbuilts like Bessie (see photos section page 4 I think), I'm five foot on tip toe and we always sleep in the overcab bed, and very cosy it is too.

croeso to the bedheads
or you could do as we did.
opposite problem. my mrs is 6'2" so i bought an ex ambi and we built our own camper to size.
we also have a meet in sept at blackpool which you woulkd be welcome to come for a chat an look round.
you don't have to have a van you could turn up in a tent or [gulp] caravan
or just pop in for the day

height

Hi,
thank you everyone one for your warm welcome and advice.
the height problem i was really concerned about was driving it. i know a transit is fine ( had a transit van B.K- before kids:) )
we will do our best to get to the bedford gathering on the sunday.
regards,
Vicky.

I remember a lady selling her Beddie soon after buying it,`cos she couldn`t get into the drivers seat via the drivers door! A bloke would have just got in the camper door and walked through, but I suppose it`s just a male thing!!!![baa] Pop- ups are good when on the move and garaging, but you can`t put the kids to bed until you`ve stopped. Lutons-or coachbuilt`s to the initiated- are much better when standing still on a rainy day with nothing to do and usually have a proper toilet and an oven. Raised top vans should be the best of both worlds-but usually aren`t. Get a towhitch and fit a small trailer for the chickens and all the rest of the paraphanalia, to maximise the interior space. Don`t worry about reversing with it, just take it off to turn round, thats what my other half does (well it`s me that does that bit actually-muggins-!):B

Oh and a small plank across the driving seats will keep the dog happy and out from under your feet;]

:) Hi there,
great news :) we have just bought a bedford cf, 1975, autosleeper. It's out side on the drive.
we had a great day at the Bedford gathering, and decided it was the bedford cf we wanted, we'd looked at one advertised elsewhere on this site on the sat eve, came to the rally sunday. we've had our mechanic look it over and he says for a vehicle that old it's in good condition.
She does need an exhaust manifold and a fuse box.Oh and new curtains, a fridge, all the seats are original so need t.l.c.
Hope to be out and about real soon, just got to insure her now.
regards, vicky and paul.

yes probably will get a trailer for the chickens, though they prefer to stay home, the dog has found that she likes a whole back seat to herself and won't share, mind she wouldn't get out either, i think she sees the potential for not being left at home when we go out. the children love it too, mind we still have rainy weekends on a muddy field to endure, they may not be so enthusiastic then.
peace.

Hi Skippy
Glad you enjoyed the BG, and now you'll be able to do it in style next year.
Re: rainy days and muddy fields - you won't have that problem at BG.
Even after heavy rain on the Friday, the field remained solid, unklike some venues.
Enjoy your touring

rainy days kit in Blod includes

compendium box cont. cards- backgammon- chess -draughts.

we also have snakes and ladders and a few books.

we have a telly and a sat system [useless]

mostly we don't care and just swim in the loch even if it's raining.

because we spend most of our time wildcamping we don't have the advantage of the sites [money makers]club and slot machine places but our small [?] one is seldom bored on our travels and we always spend summers in scotland where it's supposed to be rainy.

as we usually spend one night somewhere and move on we just stop in an interesting place [castle- prison { I can definitely recommend the one at inverary- you get a chance to lock the little ones up HEEHEE}- town] and look round.
get back to van and change clothes.

we may well go to stoke ferry they've got a little thing going on third weekend in sept. i think, and its not too far.
driving the cf stretches my short little legs a bit, but exercise is good for you, isn't it?
yes please, please can we have a membership card, how do we get one?
happy days ahead.
regards, vicky.
