Slightly daunted new owner

Hi All

I have recently bought a CF1. Looking for some tips I found this site, sure its been said before but so much great stuff on here. It does make me realise how much work I have ahead of me though! I can turn my hand to most of the work but not the major mechanical bits.

The engine 2.1 diesel runs but is in need of an overhaul and a new mount. Internally all the fittings are in reasonable condition, however I have yet to discover what lurks beneath some damp marks on the walls and ceiling.

Looks like I have the usual problem of leaks in the sleeping area above the cab. My intention is to strip it out and replace timbers as needed. Can anyone recommend a suitable sealant? I thought that standard exterior sealant would be good enough but from reading a few threads here it seems this is not advised. I read on one tread that there was a PDF guide to stripping and sealing but cant seem to find it again! If it’s available I would be very grateful.

I have ordered a copy of Haynes motorhome and motorcaravan manual, which I hope, will be of help.

Probably a novice question but is it normal to have a 5 speed box reverse top left, 1st bottom left then 2nd top middle etc?

Well just wanted say hi, but seem to have just asked a number of questions, so apologies for that.

Kind Regards

Dave

Hi Dave,

It's not quite as daunting as it first appears ! Firstly, get yourself full membership of the club - it's only a few quid - and your insurance and spare parts get a discount.

If your engine is utterly goosed or really tired, the Frontera 2.3 diesel is an easy swap; if you can't do it yourself, reckon on around 10 to 12 hours labour at your local garage. Plenty of Fronteras on Ebay for a few hundred quid and your outlay can basically be zero if you break and sell the rest.

As for your leaks, you do need a specialist sealant. My personal fave is the Sikaflex range - expensive, but they do what they say on the errr tube. Try Sikaflex 295UV for sealing - it's UV resistant, flexible, and weather-proof as well as a strong glue. Beddy interiors are generally just wooden batons with ply skins.. dead easy to replace and refurbish. Flexible sealants are the key as normal ones will just give in when the camper body flexes.

I'm not sure about the box - I've got a 5 speed overdrive (electrically switched) and I've never seen the actual mechanical 5-speed unit. Top gear in 5th has the same drive ratio as the 4-speed though - you have a crawler 1st, in effect.

The Haynes motorhome manual is not that great, imho, but better than nothing. Get yourself a Haynes CF manual to cover the mechanicals and electrical bits and pieces too.

Have fun !

Magnox Thanks for the advice.
I’ll look into the frontera option; I work in the motor trade so locating one will not be an issue. As I mentioned mechanics is not a strong point but for 10-12 hours (mates rates) labour I think it may be a worthwhile investment as I think Ill be laying out time after time on the current one.

I’ll get some Sikaflex. Rather just do it once and right.

Not to sound too ignorant but the body style of your van looks similar to mine, I know mines a CF1 250 but are there any other model numbers etc I should be looking out for. Particularly when ordering parts?

Haynes manuals I've seen around so I’ll get one ordered.

I will get full membership ASAP, didn’t see that option when I registered but I’ll have a scout around for the info.

Looking forward to getting really stuck in now, if would only stop raining….

Cheers

Dave,

The camper bodies are as widely varied as they come. However, the basic cab and chassis are always common. If you have a CF1, you have a CF1... the camper body may have been built by CI (like one of mine) or Pioneer (like another of mine !) or many other coachbuilders, but the underlying mechanics are the same. What will be unique is the coachwork and interior fittings.. that's all.

If it's a CF1 250 diesel, then the drivetrain and fuel system are CF1 250 diesel parts. Brakes, electrics, panels, glass... all are common. Some bits are rarer than others though, especially the body panels, and prices can be silly for some parts so be warned ! Ebay may be your friend for some of these things...

I'm just guessing at 10 - 12 hours to remove your engine, strip the Frontera's lump and fit to the Beddie... depends on the experience and ability of your mates ! I believe it goes straight onto the existing engine mounts, but a search will pop up a couple of threads by people who have done it.

Well worth getting membership - the insurance and parts discounts for membership pay for it at least 10 times over the first time you order something.

Beddies are a classic car with a house on the back.. as long as you remember that, you won't go far wrong. And what else is as affordable and has as much character ?

The defence rests :)

and a belated croeso from me
I've been away

as mag was saying the bodies vary widely as do the interior electrics usually cobbled by the previous owner.

I'd be happy to take your old tired engine into the club spares if you do go the frontera route
