Newbie

Hey there folks

My name is Andy and I own a CF!

Damn, that sounds like an alcoholics annoymous intro... oh well...

I used to have a 1982 CF Pioneer coachbuilt motorhome a few years back but sold it due to lack of use.

Anyway, today I have just bought a 1974 CF Autohomes coachbuilt. The motorhome body seems ok (apart from its dropped an inch or two over the rear - old age does that!).

However, the cab doors and bonnet are seriously terminal!

I plan to restore the van as best I can so I'm on the lookout for replacement doors, bonnet and other odds and ends. Also, advice about how to work on the CF and also about what parts can be used across the range. For example, can a later bonnet fit my 1974 van? Mine has the spine ridge but my 1982 had a flat surface. Are they interchangable?

So, you see, I need loads of help and was hoping to make a few friends too.

I'm based in the East Midlands, literally on the A1 southbound between Peterborough (Cambs) and Grantham (Lincs).

If you are passing pop in and have a laugh, sorry, a look at my CF.

Cheers,

Andy

Ehehehe...

Hi Andy,

You've come to the right place. In fact, probably the only place for serious advice on CFs. Lots of very knowledgeable folks here, although I don't count myself amongst them !

What I do know is that doors are no problem to get hold of at a reasonable price, but CF1 bonnets are rarer than rocking horse poo; a rust-free example will hit well over a hundred quid on Ebay.

The CF2 is quite different from the CF1 in many key areas so my advice is to ask here before splashing out on any parts. However.. a CF1 is a CF1, regardless of when it was built. Body panels, doors etc, are not interchangeable with the CF2 and, as I've discovered to my cost, many electrical parts won't swap over either.

The only other thing I'd suggest is checking your A pillars - if the doors and bonnet are that badly gone, someone may have fillered over some nastiness in a structural area which you really should get put right if it turns out to be bodged. Hopefully it'll be fine, but the A pillars are worth checking.

Next thing - splash out a couple of quid (that's literally all it is !) and join the CF club. There are many parts suppliers that offer a nice discount to full members and you'll recoup the cost of joining the first time you order a part. Some nice discounts with insurers too.

Have fun !

Hey Magnox

Many thanks for the welcome and the advice.

When did the CF2 come out? My 1982 Pioneer had a different nose to my 1974 Autohome, so I assume the CF2 was around then????

I'll definitely join the club, just need to get that sorted out.

Again, many thanks,

Andy

Hi Andy

The CF2 came out in late (December?) 1984. What you had before was a CF1 facelift. These came out in 1980. Have a look at http://www.bedfordcf.co.uk/history.htm :)

Andy,

Your main source of parts will probably be a chap called Adrian Bailey - at the moment he pretty much has the monopoly in the UK on Beddy spare parts and is very knowledgeable. Tell him what you've got, and what you need.. I'd say 19 out of 20 times you get the right bit the next day. If for whatever reason, it doesn't fit, he will replace it with no problems.

However - this knowledge and service comes with a price; he is not the cheapest supplier, but does offer a discount to members.

In the future, one of Colin and Roi's plans for the club is to have a spare parts yard, with a very small mark-up to enable them to buy scrappers and parts as they become available. It's actually starting now, really, as Roi has the yard and is already dismantling some vehicles.

Anyway... Adrian Bailey sells door repair kits which might work out a hell of a lot cheaper than replacing and respraying both doors. Give him a ring.. you'll be speaking to him a lot :)

thanks Magnox
as if i didn't have enough to do without taking on Adrian...
ah well. we actually have managed to get some bits off a scrapper but it was expensive and time restricted. we need to get them before they get to the scrap yard and then there is always the problem of how to get them to here to be stripped [at my leisure as i can only manage a couple of hours at a time- i was b******d for days after the last one as we had to strip it quickly and i didn't get much off it]
I have forked out on the yard [which is for my own use - but also using it for the club] and a lot of useful tools but my limit is reached. I am also going to get Andy's list to my place [not cheap]and pay him for them plus a few other things so help in this area would be useful.
hopefully the recovery truck Banger Steve and I got will come in useful [when it's sorted out] but that will only take the smaller vans. and then it costs a bit in fuel to charge round all the places and pick them up.

if anyone has spare pennies to buy a scrapper i am happy to take it apart if they get it to me and then store and sell the parts to members for them, in fact, doing exactly what Adrian does but for us not for profit. But he does have an advantage - money -

any ideas / help in these areas would be gratefully accepted

In these parts of your quote, Roi, is precisely why AB is not so cheap.
I would guess that he has exactly the same problems, difference being it is his source of income.
