New Kids on Levelling Blocks

Hello, I'm Paul, I currently live in Brighton. I am about to buy a Bedford CF250 (1979) with my girlfriend with a view to living in it for the majority of next year on the festival circuit. We've totally fallen in love with her. The current owners recomended this site as a fantastic support resourse (and all round friendly crew) so I thought I'd say hi. Also, although my girlfriend is about to begin a course in mechanics neither of us have much vehicle experience. Would you guys have advice on what checks we should be making on the vehicle before handing over our money. Thanks;]

Welcome to the site Paul & gf. :)
Mechanical things can be fixed easier than body rust, and although most Bedfords have some, try not to get one thats too bad.
If you slide a fridge magnet over the body, it will fall off anywhere that has been bogged up.
Places to check are (everywhere), bottoms of doors and sills, around the roofline at gutter level particularly on the four corners, above the windscreen, front door pillars, around the back doors, and the wheel arches. Have a good look at the floor in the front under the mats, and try to look at the main chassis rails underneath the cab floor and forward of there. Poke them in the corners with a screwdriver!
If it doesn't have a newish MOT I would insist that it passes a new one. If the seller won't do this, I would walk away, as he knows things that you don't.
Good luck with the purchase, and I hope you have lots of good times with her. (the camper I mean)

I'm phoning for insurance quotes. They all want to know the name of the converter. According to the seller, the van is as new (+30 years) but the converters name is unknown. Any ideas?

croeso to the bedheads
I think the easiest way to identify the converter would be to look through the bedford history bit done by colin on the front menu page
failing that post a pic or send one and we'll see if we can find out the body maker.

Try RH classic insurance:
http://www.rhclassicinsurance.co.uk/

That's who I'm with. Costs £120 ish a year fully comp, no mileage limit and they don't want to know anything!
Told them it was a "motorcaravan" which is what the log book say, it's actually a converted Ambulance which I'm sure would cause problems elsewhere. I recently installed an LPG conversion myself and when I told them all they said was "Thanks for that we've made a note of it". I even phoned them back to make sure they didn't want conversion certificates etc, they didn't.

Don't forget, if you become a CF-UK member you'll get discounts from some insurance companies. See http://www.bedfordcf.co.uk/mboard/thread.php?id=2427

It currently costs £2.50 to join but it's going up in a few days so be quick

the last one on there is a CF1 with what looks like an adventura 4 berth but it might be a glendale.
