Introduction

Most of my time in the motor trade was spent mending fleet and owner-driver CFs (and CAs - 4-speed floor change a speciality), eventually working out of a Hawson-bodied 97790 with a bundle of hefty SVOS bits bolted on, for reliability , and kitted out to fix anything wherever a van lived (or died). Naturally with most of my work being on CFs there isn't much I haven't tackled across the range, including making what started as a LC 1600cc 3-speed 97170 do 280 miles in 3 hours on a HC 2000cc by the time I'd finished. Happy days.
I had thought obsolescence had made my experience no more than (mostly) happy memories and was getting round to turfing out the bulk of the paperwork and stuff I kept until I fell across bedford-cf.co.uk
So here I am.

Ta muchly.

I haven't got a CF any more; oddly enough if I was to go back to my favourite it would be a bog standard '62 CASV with shallow one-piece screen but it was hard keeping '69ers going as long as some lasted in the ding dong trade; last of my pet CAs wobbled off the road about 1995 and got broken up for the uprated front axle and 4-speed floor change conversion for another Morrison Electrofreeze. The CF going obsolete worked through the fleets I did for faster than the CA stopping production in '69 and bits for '57 split screen could still be had.

Anyway. On top of mending CFs for so long that taking Delco distributors out to change contact breaker points became the easiest way for me to beat the GM job time I also taught motor vehicle (light and heavy) and collected some paperwork along the way. If the work was there still I'd be in the game now but I pulled out about 1990 as the ding dong trade died and sold the Hawson-bodied tank because the head ran so hot that hardened valve seats wouldn't stay in, nor would it run so well with the ignition timing knocked back enough for the dreadful stuff sold as unleaded then.

I liked the CF and I'm surprised there seem to be so many still running. And pleased; I did well out of the CF so I've a fondness for the beast even if it bit me a few times while I worked out how to tame it.

I've gotten rusty of course but it's good to feel able to help. I've added a couple of comments already and hope I've got the balance right. I can get a bit too technical at times...

Oh my. Not been here 10 minutes and a CA turns up!

Know anything more about it? Panel van or not? Not that it matters - if the chassis cowl/cab is intact that's the main thing.

Tell me more?

it was in a scrap yard near me but he said it was too good to crush and it was a camper
no idea what he wants for it but can contact and see if he's still got it and how much if you want.
and there's a recovery fella near by too who would charge £1 a mile [don't know if that is for both ways or just one]
if our recovery was working I would happily bring it to you for fuel.

It's worth an ask if you wouldn't mind; in my experience most scrappys know a good 'damaged repairable' when they get one.

Whether the piggy bank will squeal too much might kill the idea for now though, not to mention lack of hard standing and a pile of rubble in the way but that's the job in hand at present with an eye to somewhere comfy for a rebuild project. It'll happen soon enough though.

Incidentally, a quid a mile even round trip seems reasonable considering a decent 3.5tonner can cost 50p/mile and more to run legit; courier stuff a mate of mine does weighs in at 50p/mile and 10quid/hour for his big VW and I think that's derisory for what's expected, not least by Inland Revenue and Customs & Excise .

Wassup with your steam? Nothing serious I hope.
