Hatton country world

Hey Gethin, I had a look on the web and Hatton looks good...the times seem to be good for me too. Hope to plan the trip around that weekend then, regards, Melissa.

veggi oil

Hi Roi, I did just that after I had posted..Thankyou for the help. Some of is was a bit "techi" for me but I think if I have a 75/25 mix I will do very well, but my brother tells me I will smell like "dinky Dougnuts"!. Thanks for your help.
Keep me posted on any meets but hopefully I can attend the Hatton country park meet in August. I know it's close, but to me that's years away ( I'm a shiny, happy Beddy owner and have a thirst for knowledge)Text

Show me a Bedford CF that doesn't have filler or welds in it and it'll be the one that went into the museum, straight from the factory ! Mine has done 23,000 miles, 2 owners from new, stored in a barn and yet it still needs some work on the front wings and doors to bring it back to 'as new' condition. I also spotted a plate welded in under the driver's side - they just weren't made with longevity in mind and the quality of British motor vehicles in the 70s/80s, or rather lack of it, is legendary. However, as your bro pointed out, they can be fixed with spanners and don't need a PC plugged in to diagnose the fault.

I'm not really up to speed with diesels and veg oil, but a colleague of mine runs an old Golf estate on it. He lets it warm up with diesel, then pushes a switch to run it on 100% veg oil. However.. every 6 months or so he needs to take the head off and clear the gunk (which looks very similar to a deep-fat fryer that hasn't been cleaned in ages !) to ensure everything is ok. Whether or not you would face the same problem with a mix is something Roi could tell you more about.

Quite a few people have re-painted their vans using a roller and marine-quality paint with very good results. The SBMCC has more information on how to do this and thin the paints properly. Of course, it doesn't look as good as a professional respray but from a few yards away you'd be hard pushed to spot the difference. However, repainting a cab on a coachbuilt and repainting an entire panel van like yours is a massive difference in time invested.

If you plan on wild camping, or using the farmer's field sites with no electrical hook-ups, make sure you're electrically independent.. i.e... same as someone with a tent. Gas light, gas heater, battery or wind-up radio, lots of books/games and good company. In fact... the last two pretty much defines the Beddy community. We resent paying 30 quid a night for an electricity hook-up that blows the minute you plug a kettle or tv in, at a site that has cleared the trees to make more space for the Hymers and the big caravans.

If you want to know how to make yourself electrically independant and yet still have electricity... hopefully I'll be able to get my solar/wind workshop running this Summer.

Have fun

sorry but they even came out of the factory fillered up to the eye balls , the construction of the van using large sheets of metal for the side panels made it impossible for ripple free vans, the technology wasnt the same then as now , they went for maximium load space ,not like modern vans that are twin skinned and bonded together. get a cf panel van , cf1 or cf2 and take the rear panels back to bare metal , you will go through nearly 1/4" of filler on rear lower panels. sad really. still ' id rather die rebuilding a bedford than own a f*rd or vw ' . lol;]

I'm not sure that leaving the factory 'fillered up to the eye balls' is entirely true; seam sealer was used certainly but that's still the norm.

have to agree with phil on that one,as an owner of a brand new cf2 the only place i found filler was in the rear number plate valance, thats different now though as ive went through a bit customising it,the rest mostly consisted of seam sealer

sorry guys but come take a look at mine , 86 cf2 , ive took sections back through 1/4" of filler thats under the factory primer. mines had only one respray in its life , that was a coat of knacker lacqaur , i have the original build /release sheet from luton . you would be supprised how much filler goes into cars and vans in the quality control ares of car/van production. ok i except that not every single van produced had filler applied but a good few of them would have.

Oh guys!

When I was very small I remember my Mum driving a Dormobile. My lovely young Mum used to pick up all the other young Mums and their preschool offspring and take them to the fruit gardens in Kent to pick fruit (seriously think of Darling Buds of May and that's what it was like). At the end of the long hot days she would drive them for miles back home again..me in tow. For some reason I called her Van Sylvia, it was green! I am so happy to own a Bedford, I couldn't care less about filler (until I find it anyway!)
I have only found one patch of filler so far but the paint job is a bit sad. From 10 metres away she looks good but..the wheel arches and lower panels are, in fact, a completely different white than the main body so I'm looking forward to a bit more filler in the nether regions! My little bro' (bless) has offered to resray the whole camper if I wet and dry her...This is great, I save money, but become a manual labourer. Hmmm.....
My side window seals are leaking like sieves, any one know where the best value replacements are? Ebay at £78.00 is a bit steep when I'm searching for a few of them.
My plan is to refurb to a reasonable standard within the next couple of years, and then buy a mid 60's Dormoblie (and call her Sylvia no doubt!)
Meet you all soon I hope, and I'm sure you all have a few tips to help me on my "renovation" way.
P.S Any meets in early June ? I've got some spare time.

Get onto those seals quickly Melissa - I have a van sitting on my drive which has had the interior ruined by leaks. You might have to bite the bullet and pay the prices on Ebay (do check the club suppliers first though - you have access to the links and discounts as a card holder) but it's cheaper than rebuilding the interior.

I don't envy you the sandpapering !

Cheers magnox, I really worry about my stamina and sandpaper..I push pens and keysboards, wear a suit and talk finance all week, but deep down I'm a grease monkey! My brother says it will take me two full days to do a full rub down...Groan! Is this true ? He does tend to tease me 'cos I'm a bit gullible.

Great, thanks for that Stumpy..I hate ebay..They've got the market sown up and it's too expensive for minor parts.

What a lovely image of the Dormobile - young mums and children picking fruit... you're probably on a brochure somewhere ! Can you remember if it was a Bedford, VW, Ford, etc ?? Probably not, I'm guessing, but what a fab picture you paint.

Hate to tell you this, though, but once you've had a Beddy, you'll always have a Beddy. The age, the body, the size... they are all subject to change, but you've been infected with the virus, even if you don't know it yet.

Anyway - back on topic.. window seals. Stumpy has the right of it - Woolies are the camper van's best friend - get hold of some para-cord as well to fit it.. this might not make sense to you now, but your brother will know exactly what I'm talking about !

para cord

Is that the cord you run around the seal prior to fitting the glass back in place and remove it as the glass fits back in ? I know it's a bit of a sin but I had to gun some sealer around the rubber just to stave off the flood water for now!

Stumpy1972uk1, I'll have a look as soon as I can.Thank you for your help. I took Bella for a drive today, just for the hell of it, WOW I loved it. Out again tomorrow selling my parents junk at a car boot sale to raise funds for Bellas' renovation. Anyone around the Gosport area in the Morning, I'll be in Bridgemary HA HA

Melissa - spot on with the use for para-cord.. it's used to pull the window seals into the van. Just needs a careful touch and it's very easy to do. When I say 'very easy', I mean in comparison with wrestling a greasy elephant. What it won't do is break.

Have a look at another topic in the Questions section. Ed-Don has the same problem as you with leaky seals and we recommend Sikaflex 291 as the sealant to use for various reasons. 10 quid a tube for your gun.

Good luck with the boot sale

Something for nothing!!

Hi Magnox, I firmly believe in my mind that the Dormoblie my Mum drove was a Bedford, but she is going to look out our old photos to clarify this. I remember her really well though. The whole length had windows and full length polished wooden benches ran down each side, obviously without seat belts (it must have been quite an uncomfortable ride for the passengers) but us children loved it, we used to kneel up looking out of the windows singing a song (very loudly) about each animal we spotted, and screamong at my Mum to go faster at the hump backed hill that made your tummy go funny if you went over at a decent speed! Great memories.

I tried to raise funds for "Bella's" restoration at a car boot sale this morning, but I can't believe how miserly folk can be. I don't do this sort of thing very often and today has put me off ever trying to make money this way again. I took my daughters last bike, it cost me nearly £100 and she used it for a while but it was in excellent condition, I brought it back home because I couldn't get more than £5.00! The toys that cost over £50.00 I was selling at £3.00 or £4.00! They all wanted something for nothing
The big bonus was I had two offers for "Bella" and told how lovely she was, that brightened my day.

I think I'm going to take our first trip out late next week (taking the little'un out of school for a day now that the junior sats are over!) We live very close to the new forest so may go that way or perhaps the the Poole/Bournemouth area. Wish us luck.
