France is full off free campsites.
they call them Aires and virtually every town a village has them.
they attract tourist in caravans and campers to the town.
the town covers the cost of maintaining them but sometimes you are asked to pay a euro or two towards the electric and water.
they nearly all have waste dumps for both grey and black waste, frsh water and some electric hook ups.
you can buy guides which list them.
there is also the France "Passion" which is a small payment siimilar to the stopovers scheme started here in the uk but this has been going for some years now. it is vinyards and other places which offer free stopovers for one or two nights, no facilities but you are expected to buy the local produce in return although there is no actual obligation to.
just two ways we lag behind our European neighbours with regard to tourists. they welcome them because of the money they will spend. in this country we cram them on to campsites and rip them off and make them as un welcome as possible in every way they can by height barriers and restrictions on parking.
these aires are also available in Belgium, Holland, Germany and Spain and Portugal I think but by different names of course.
perhaps our French members could fill in more details
