Hellooooooooooooooooooo

Evening all

I'll be collecting my first camper van on Sunday - a Bedford CF250. I'm so excited I could burst (but hopefully I won't!).

Looking forward to chatting with you all - I'm sure I'll need lots of help and advice over the coming months.

Jilly

ps.... driven lots of cars and minibus type jobs, but never a camper, so any top tips from all you more experienced folks out there? I'm collecting from Birmingham and driving back to Norfolk and have no expectations at all other than probably driving back between 50 and 60mph which will be VERY strange to me.

Any questions I should ask from the seller (bit of a long story but my mate who owns a garage went to see the camper for me (and yes, I do trust him implicitly) so I've not actually seen it in the flesh!).

Any help/advice greatly appreciated.

50 /60mph will be the best way to bring her home.

Dont push to hard and make sure that you have recovery just in case.....

The brakes arnt what you will have been used to so be ready.......

Best of all enjoy life back in the slow lane.;]

Thanks Gethin

It will certainly be very different to my Boxster that's for sure! All I need for Beryl now is one of those really tacky/cheesy/old fashioned, but brilliant, "My other car's a Porsche" sticker!

I can't believe I'm so excited - didn't get to sleep until 3.30 this morning! Let's hope Beryl lives up to the excitement, that I won't need recovering (I've upgraded just in case!!) and that she gets me home in one piece

Is there a specific manual (ie Haynes) that would cover Beryl? I've seen a general one for a van - would this be the best one?

Hi Jilly, and welcome to the site.
Haynes manual is what we all seem to use. There are two the later one covers both the CF1 and the CF2, so if yours is 1981 or more (longer bonnet and squarer lines), make sure that is the one you get.

There is a CD manual available also.

Well Beryl is home She was very well behaved on the way home and I did get her to 65 (just to try her!) and she had no problem but the petrol gauge was moving before my eyes so I slowed back down

I stopped on the way and had a McDonalds which I of course took back to my very large parking space and ate in comfort

Will be giving her a good look over at the weekend but so far I'm very impressed

Only things I have noticed so far is bulb gone for petrol gauge and water sensor's not working, so any advice for a newbie gladly welcomed

Oh and I had my first "wave" too and I was so excited to receive it I turned on the indicator and the wipers instead of waving back so if it was someone on here - sorry!

Hi Jilly,

Welcome to the slow lane ! As your petrol gauge is working, but your temperature gauge isn't (very common), I'd suspect a dead temperature sender. Even I have managed to replace one of those and the Haynes manual has all the details. It's basically the sensor that tells the gauge what to display.

Get used to the waves - there's something about old Beddy campers that makes people smile, whether they're young or old. You might notice a lot more accommodation from people on the road compared to driving the Porsche ... which is slower than my Volvo estate, but that's a topic for another time *cough*.

Remember to use a fuel additive with every tank and keep her below 60, if only to prevent premature deafness.

Now all you need to do is sign up to be a club member and post us some piccies of your van !

It's not the temp gauge that's not working it's the water gauge in the back - ie the sensor (I guess?!) is in the water tank under the seat. Not sure where to start to see what's not working?

The water sensor thats in your water tank is only 2 metal prongs and it can become tarnished.

No amount of cleaning will remove the tarnish though.

To get a new 1 then take it out and go to a caravan shop to get it matched up.

You should have 12v at 1 of the terminals and 0v on the other.

Hi Jilly, I collected my CF 250 "Bella" last month and I am still on a high! I took a week off to look at my new baby and after careful consideration stripped the internal fittings out!!! In the past week I have ripped out the entire inside..learnt how to angle grind out the rust and have also welded together the bits that needed replacing!! I have bought new seals for the poptop and replaced them, sealed gaps in the window seals and soundproofed the who;e floorpan. Wow...Then I had to go to a couple of days of meetings in London and pay for my nails etc .. But all I could think about was getting back to "Bella" How weird is this camper thing ? I really am obsessed. I have had new fittings made for everything.. I have changed every hinge, carpet, floor covering and upholstered the soft furnishings, I now feel she is all shiny, new and mine. I think I may have her on the road by Saturday ! There is a beer festival in Petersfield on Saturday and she may have her virgin voyage there...I do hope so. Good luck with yours
What year is Beryl? maybe you could email me some pics? My Little girl thinks it's the coolest thing in the world to own a camper that's not a VW and I think Bella is is the best looking camper around. You will think the same of Beryl too..really, good luck and hope to see you around.Melissa

Morning all

Gethin - thank you. I think even I could manage to take the sensor out and take it to a caravan shop so hopefully that'll be all it needs

Melissa - I agree with all you've said, and I think you're brill for doing all the rust and interior etc. Beryl is 1983 and is the over cab motorhome.

My next problem is a few drops of oil on the drive under Beryl - not what I would call a puddle but she's been in the same place since Tuesday evening and there's a mark of about 4 inches long. Someone did say that "oh, it's old, all Bedfords do that" - perhaps someone could clarify or otherwise! lol. I'll see if my bro can come round at the weekend - we both had old beetles in the past so hopefully he'll have an idea. In the meantime I'll have a look at the Haynes manual and see if the oil is redish or black, but all suggestions welcome!!

I'll pop up some pics this weekend once Beryl's had a wash and brush up - the closest she looks in the pics in the members area is the Baker family's Bessie

The most likely place for oil to drop from is the rocercover.

They have a tendency to leak and they can be a bit fiddly to cure.
