Hello Everybody!

Hello everyone. Recently bought a 1984 Bedford CF autosleeper clubman petrol. It's a great van, but I'm new to all this and I was wondering if I'm the only person who has a problem finding first gear?!? It seems a bit too easy to find reverse, much to the surprise of the guy behind me when I had to stop in a passing place last weekend!

Welcome to the site. Really your question(s) should be addressed elsewhere for maximum results, but maybe I can help with your gear selection problem. There could be two reasons (three if I was rude) for this, 1 = you are female (my wife can`t get any gear anytime, hence we have an autobox,) 2 = you are not sitting in the drivers seat, or are in the upper bed (had this one myself) lol Best of luck with the Clubman, its a nice motor and you should have plenty of fun with it

Hello Poocini, and welcome to the site.
I'm not familiar with the manual gearbox, as both mine are auto.
But as Bob in his own way said, You may get better results if you ask this in the "CF Questions" forum.
People don't normally complain of this, so maybe yours has a problem. If so, someone there should be able to tell you what it may be. But hopefully it's just a matter of "getting the knack".

Yes, know the feeling. I have a 2.3 petrol manual and 1st can be a bit tricky but it's my husband that has the most difficulty;D not me ha ha. To be honest its just learning where it is. Practise finding it when your just sat in the van. Mine, I have to direct it more towards the right as reverse is straight on or slip from second to first before you pull off. All the joys of getting to know your van and welcome to the site.;)

Mine has the same problem, and i'm a bloke - all 6'4" of me!!!!!!

So don't worry about anyone questioning who's in the the driving seat (LOL) I believe it is just a case of wear in the box (on the selector side) - i actually cured mine just by chance with a new gearstick gaitor that simply 'buffered' the gearstick stick when pushed for reverse. Although a common problem, i dont think it is a seriousone, more of something you learn to live with, although there are many more knowledgeable than me to tell you exactly why!!!!

You're not alone !

How weird.. I happen to be one of the only bods able to find 1st on my 1984 cf. My Dad has to reverse everywhere ! I find that reverse is found VERY easily but then if you do make the mistake of going there you will not find another gear unless you put her back into reverse then push the knob hard into reverse and keep pushing it to the left and away from you, then let it fall back into neutral, from there I have to gently find the very subtle resistance point and gently ease her into 1st... from then on it's easy.. until you reach traffic lights or a roundabout and have to find 1st all over again...HA HA.
Strange how us girls seem to have the knack of coaxing these old gears into their place. I have asked 3 guys to drive Bella and none of them can use the gears once they have put her in reverse. Is this just a 1984 problem ?

You just need to go gentle , I have a 84 Clubman and it just takes getting used to. But can be frustrating moving off at a roundabout fully laden!!:#
