Taken up the reins on this lovely camper

Hi all, My name is Mike, My passion is Volvos, I have a 240 estate that I have converted to turbo and added go faster parts to, but as I age I am tending to crave high speed less and want a more relaxing experience on the road, I recently purchased a 1982 Austin MiniMetro 1.0l, exactly the same as my first ever car.

My wife and I decided to get a camper this summer for our holidays,

We found this great expample for sale and I went to see it last weekend,

I shook the sellers hand on it and phoned the missus to tell her the good news,

Its a 1985 2.0L 3 speed auto MURVI, only 11k on the odo!!

New tyres, drives and feels like new.

I have also found a set of slotmag alloys that I am serious about getting.

We are getting a taxi down to fetch it on Friday evening and drive it back up to home. Excited is not the word!!

Glad to have found this forum, more pics soon.

Cheers, Hopefully it should be fine, I took it for a little test drive round the place when I went to see it and it was great, started and ran like new, my only concern was the noise from the engine, I understand these engines has a timing chain and I think it was that I could hear. I will probably get some sound matting and stick it on the inside of the engine cover and some carpet for the outside.

Dont happen to want a Volvo 240 turbo do you? haha.

Sorry can't advise on the engine sound but there are many other very helpful people on here who I'm sure will be able to. The Volvo? I seriously have enough probs with my 'fleet' (lol) as it is so unless the Volvo can pull my van off the mechanics drive this side of summer then I will have to decline your kind offer

The timing chain should run quietly. If it's noisy then either the adjuster is stuck closed or the chain needs renewing.
If the noise is tapping or clattering from the top end then try an oil (& fiter) change to see whether the cam followers sort themselves out once they get fresh oil in them. This can sometimes sort out a stuck timing chain adjuster too.

I pulled a portacabin down with it last week, a van should be no problem.;)

I have to admit it did sound more like lifters/buckets tappets to me, can anyone give me a link to an exploded view of the engine so I know what I'm dealing with?

Does the cam act directly on valve buckets or what?

Dont forget this engine has only 11k, so I am assuming the chain should be ok, if it were a belt I would want to change it.

I will give the engine a decent service as a matter of course.

1985 (CF2) Opel 2 litre engine has hydraulic cam followers (lifters) with rocker arms to the inclined valves. Put a question up in 'CF questions' part of the forum if the rattling won't go away with fresh oil in.

Meanwhile have a look on ebay for the Haynes manual, 1969-1987 (not 1969-1976); the later manual has CF2 stuff like Opel engine overhaul & adjustments in the supplement

Its got a gas fired indirect fan heater under the floor, a copper immersion tank hot water system, a nice 4 speaker cd/radio stereo with remote control, 2 sunroofs, a 2 ring hob and grill, a coolbox, a rock and roll sofa-bed, rotatimg captain seats and 2 litre 4 cyl engine and oh so easy to drive 3 speed autobox.

It cruises nicely at 50-60 mph returning 25mpg and is soooo easy to drive, I feel I could do 8 hrs in it non stop and not feel tired.

We picked it up yesterday at 7 pm and by 8 we were setting up at a campsite in the Brecon national park.

anyway on with the pics.......

This morning we had coffee and bacon sandwiches cooked on my meths stove.

Boot/storage

eightystacular dash.

Some kids nicked the MURVI badge off the front, I was thinking about making one that says BEDFWD

Cruising round the Brecon Beacons
