a whole new type of van for me!

OK, new to this forum, and new to the whole Bedford CF van thing, so go easy on me

I'm not totally new to vans, as I'm into Classic VW vans, just the Bedford CF is a whole new world to me, so any info/advice would be more than welcome!

Anyway, I saw this a few months ago, and well, it got the better of me!

It's a diesel 1971 Bedford CF, but that's as much as I know at the moment, apart from the fact that it was featured in a Horror movie in Bristol at some-point, hence the name

What can I say?
Cool! Chilling! (Hopefully not Flak-y)
Are you becoming an Ice Cream man?
What tune does it make?
Cone-gratulations!
Whippy!

ok I'll stop now

unfortunately Mikeyboy, it had no chimes with it, but not the end of the world, might be cool to update with something a little more modern, not sure yet?

It's pretty solid in the important areas, a bit crusty on the bonnet just around the badge area, not sure if it was worth getting repaired, or just look for a 2nd hand bonnet?

What are CF's like in terms of getting parts etc. - are they expensive, hard to find?

Parts for the body are hard if not none existent to find.

Mechanacaly things are a bit earier.

First thing you need to find out is which diesel engine you have fitted.

Best way to identify which engine is to take a photo, upload it to an image hosting site like photobucket or googlephoto (via a googlemail account) & follow the FAQ that appears to the left of the message box when you reply to a post.

1971, if original, could be Perkins 4.108 or 4.154.

no problems, I'll get some pics tomorrow, any specific areas/numbers etc. which will help ID it that I can photo?

Any pros/cons between the Perkins 4.108 or 4.154 you mentioned? Which should I be hoping for?

Useful numbers for what was fitted at the factory are on the 2 plates that on yours may not be on the cab door frame but somewhere in the cab. It there's a strip spot welded to the bulkhead above the heater box under the bonnet then the 13-character chassis number starting 97- that should be on it (repeated on the smaller of the 2 plates in the cab & also should be on the V5 registration document) is a good start. Engine size in cubic inch is on the larger of the 2 plates if they're still on the van.

4.108 is the 108 cu in, 1800cc; 4.154 is the 154 cu in, 2500cc. Basically the same engine but the 4.108 gets there more slowly...

engine pics…

Hope these help with the id?

on a larger (of two) plates on the inside front of the bulkhead (passenger side) I found this;

(part of the) chassis number
108D
2.14

1.00
1.30

I think the last two numbers (1.00 & 1.30) refer to the front/rear axle weight?

I assume then that the 108D makes it the 4.108 is the 108 cu in, 1800cc Phil?

Not sure what the 2.14 refers to?

Perkins 4.108 it is (rocker cover shape & 108D off the plate. Chassis number probably 97F902V****** if the registration year lines up well enough with production year.

You'll likely need the 4.108 Perkins workshop manual at some point -
http://www.endeavourowners.com/dscsn/info/manuals.html
This is for the marine version; cooling system is the main difference, otherwise it's the same as the road vehicle version.

Finding an oil filler cap might be a good place to start on the maintenance front...

you could always consider a small p.a system, like the ones they use on voting days and play the Adams family theme tune though it, that would sound quite for that look and quite distinctive too.

What bits do you need?
I know a Ice Cream man who has loads of bits, I should be seeing him later this week or next week.
I also know of two ambulances in a scrap yard
Sorry the bonnets going on mine.
What are you going to do with it?
Could be a cool camper

an oil filler cap, thats for sure! Just checked the bonnet, and TBH, it is not that bad so probably a minor repair to get it sorted!

I wanted to make it into a high quality mobile ice-cream/coffee/cookies van selling hand made organic ice-cream, fresh ground coffee etc. but, I'm also trying to get my ’61 VW Splittie finished at the same time, and that is consuming alot of resources/time, so this keeps getting pushed back further and further, so I'm not 100% will I ever get round to it?

I wonder if there are any good/experienced CF mechanics in or around Hastings/Sussex area?

OK bits wise these would be good;

1) 2x Rear light lenses (see pic below for type)

2) Drivers door lock/handle/mechanism (complete with key if possible?)

3) Air filter/pipe for the engine

4) Oil filler cap

5) Drivers rear view mirror

6) Foot pedal rubbers

7) Windscreen? (possible/optional depending on cost/feasibility?)

8) Hubcaps (if they are in great condition!)

9) any other interesting bits, chimes etc.?

PM me your phone number and I will have a look I will try to get there next week.
If the ambulances are best bet for a screen but how would you get it?
The lenses will no doubt be sourced from some thing else
I will have a chat with the ambulance owner and the Ice cream man and see if they are happy to pass contact details on.
Have you tried your local Ice cream men?
Do you realise what your CF is worth as an ice cream van?
