What a good idea!
I've been using it as a hand rest.
Carefully arranged and tensioned would still allow gear changes.:D

There is a repair kit available to cure this

If you use the search section you should find the posting that covered where the kit is available from

I use my son - he gently stabilises it as we tootle down the motorway. He likes it as he feels like he is co-driving. Saw a repair kit on ebay from ABC. Expensive though.

I fitted the repair kit and it solved the problem for a few thousand miles, but then the rattle came back and now as bad as ever. I agree the bungee method...

I have a small bracket attached to the side of the drivers seat which the stick rests in when in top which stops the rattle. The time it takes between the other gears is not long and if I need to go up a hill in third I hold the stick. Its worked really well for the 3 years we have had the van so far.

can posibble post pics if needed by anyone.

When I had mine a few years ago ('she' made me sell it....) I turned up new nylon washers for the gearstick but a little oversize so that the tension could be set when screwing down the top nut - perhaps you could either do this or show youre existing washers to someone with a lathe who could do this.

Ah, so I'm not the only one with a rattling gearstick then... When I'm in a town, it doesn't rattle much. It seems like it only does it when I'm cruising down the highway. Or at least that's when I notice it. I use the "knee" method. When I'm in top gear I just put my left leg up on the seat (I always do that, feels comfy when driving for 10 hours or more) and use my knee to keep the stick kinda steady. When I don't do that, I usually have my foot resting on the engine cover, so I still use my leg to keep it steady. Works so far.. When I don't have my foot up resting somewhere, I usually have it on the clutch to downshift, so I use my hand..

Never felt the need for a repair kit yet..

I did the same thing for both my vans earlier this year, but in phospher bronze. With hindsight, it would have been simpler sticking to nylon, but metalworking is much more fun. The result is as rattle-free as a Bedfor is likely to be.

Any chance you still have a note of the dimensions?

Gearstick rattle.

Hi to all,

I cured the gearstick rattle problem some time ago and put the idea forward to this form on the basis that I fitted it and it work, and is still working on my own Bedford.
This was done by a spring wire clip and a shim C washer on later type turrets, on threaded type turrets the sme spring clip and C washer but with a hole drilled through the turret and a spilt pin fitted to lock down the spring clip.

Thanks Doug,

Ive got an early 4 speed vauxhall (clip on cover to the turret)- would your idea work for that? If you could possibly produce an idiots guide with pics, my village elders will remove my long sleeved dressing gown!

Gearstick rattle.

Hi Mikeyboy,

Yes it would because that is what I have myself and it has worked a treat, I sent one to Phil along with a reconned gearbox and he said he would put up some pic's after he had fitted it all but I think he reused a horse shoe circlip in stead.
It is very simple, (like myself) if you send me an address I will send you a sping wire clip, all you need to make sure of is that it is fitted on top of a C washer and it is in the groove around the inside of the turret.
If your plastic incert has four raised lugs around the top you cut them off with a small sharp chisel to make room for the clip.

Doug.

Doug, youre a superstar!
However- bigger plans include fitting the Laycock overdrive I bought some time ago and putting in a reverse light switch, which I dont think is compatible with my clip on turret cover. Ive started stripping down the vauxhall VX gearbox but think Ive met my limit of knowing what the hell Im doing. How are you fixed late autumn / early winter? Interested in the job? I still need to find the appropriate propshaft to get everything in place but as soon as I do, Im ready for you to work your magic. Just let me know how many beer tokens it needs!

Mike
