New CF Glendale Owner

Evening All,

Membership card arrived today, so I thought it would be a good time to say hello.

We have had our CF for a couple of weeks now, it's a 1980 MK1 Glendale 1000L Motorhome.

I've been lurking on the site for a couple of weeks, seeing what you're all up to, sometime soon I will get some decent photos posted and so you can see what I'm up to on restoration/renovation.

This is the van as it was when I bought it: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280567769484&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

So far the big problem has been fuel economy - something like 15 mpg, which I think is normal, but until you watch the needle drop you don't realise quite how many gallons that is to do long distances!

The paint job is very rough, basically chucked on with a paintbrush, but underneath it seems to be largely sound with the odd bit of cosmetic rust.

The van has now had a very thorough clean, which it needed, the manky old carpet is out of the front, a new K&N air filter and a pretty huge sound system is pretty much sorted - amp, couple of subs, and several speakers already fitted. All hidden under seats etc, but should be ideal for movies on the laptop in the back on camping weekends.

We're not totally new to classic cars, but we've never had anything as big as this - we've just finished rebuilding a Jowett Jupiter that's been in the garage since 1979, and recent cars have included a 1986 Capri (for my sins) amongst other things.

I'm sure I'll have a million questions, hopefully I can help with providing some answers in time.

Jack.

Hi Jack and welcome theres lots of advice on here with a sprinkling of humour to go with it. I hope your CF turns out to be everything you hope for. Hopefully next year you can get to some of the events we meet up at also.

Well, we've set the expectation pretty low to start with, as with any car 30 years old there's bound to be some previous owners who've done all kinds of things to it that we will discover, thankfully so far nothing that can't be fixed, and I've not found anything unsafe in the wiring or gas system so perhaps we have done well on this one.

Really looking forward to meeting some other Bedford owners - events next year sound good, and hopefully we can learn a few more things about the van while we're there!

Starter question while we're here: Exhausts - is there a supplier of new exhaust systems (from the joint visible from inside the cab backwards) I should be looking out for? Preferably stainless if such a thing exists. I know a cheap place to get a custom exhaust, but if there's one off the shelf that's going to be much cheaper.

Jack.

Well, we got a good deal, but we didn't get it for £1,220, if that makes you feel any better :)

Already loving driving around in it, I always thought being a truck driver would be cool, just getting a taste of it now...

Well, it wasn't much over £1,220 - the original budget was £2K including any work that needed doing, so far I still have more than £400 in the budget for winter work after having spent a bit on the filter, new spark plugs and a few wires and things.

Thinking about a DIY paint job on the cab, I think all white look sort of odd - a nice shade of blue, green or red maybe would hide the dirt a bit better as well.

Jack.
