ill help ya with this mike
basic transit things,

look at the wings, (from the bottom to were it meets the bumper)
bottom of the rear doors
spring hangers (at the end of the rear springs)
inner arch(under the battery in the engine both sides behind the sound deadining )
door cills (get under the plastic treads and dig)
genral cargo floor from underneath (full lengh of the van)
rear valance (behind the rear bumper)

the floor WILL be rotted they all do it mk3 mk4 mk5

double rear wheels

look for any sign of leakage from the gasket or seals on the
prop and rear diff caseing

listen for any humming , grumbling or even skipping at the rear
all more or less means on a van that age its buggered and will require a rebuild.

steering on them old birds is as wooly as a sheeps and gearbox will be like stirring oats but thats normal for these vans at a late age,

rust kills these vans so take a magnet, check every place and panel for rot cos these vans end up caked in filler if there bodged, engines on them are pretty solid but just do the normal checks, is it a diesel or a pinto ?

mk3`s are getting rare now there is lots of subtle mods between the mk3 mk4 and mk5s dont be fooled by any "these vans were all the same" they had some parts in common but to a transit enthusiast we can tell the difference fire some photos up of it if you can and ill see if it has had any later models stuff fitted

not much to worry about in that as its a chassis cab

see its had atleast 1 new wing, thats a bonus and it looks like a proper mk3-mk4 one at that so the last owner paid attention, just check the inner arches on teh front and floor mounting points for the body,

dunno if that dorm body is ford SVO but there should be a plate in the drivers footwell that says SVO if it is

cracking looking big bus though mike

Well i drove it 45 miles home, drives nice, bit sluggish but everything works ok.Only probs are badly cracked screen, slight judder on brakes at low speed.
Well pleased so far.
Not so pleased with porta potti & not cassette toilet as i was told, and lost key to padlock on door so only way into back at moment is over front seats...(someone should have had a video camera lol)Had huge boltcroppers on it and they wont touch it.
More pics,Post some interior tomorrow.

looks a decent enuff van that mike

later chunky mk4 steering wheel has been fitted much better than teh skinny 2 spoke ones fitted when new, they wont win any speed tests as you already have noticed, but the old DI is as reliable as anything,

wee bit of paint and those wheels tarted that van will make a great looking big thing, keep it serviced and it will run forever, only thing i would do to it straight away is cover the chassis (if solid) and get it protected will do ya proud i reckon

Had good look at it today, chassis is solid.as is underneath on general,no spare wheel or anywhere to put one but looks like it may have had carrier on back.
Inner wings good, needs bit of sorting where fibreglass top meets front of cab.
needs new gear lever gaiter etc. Also rocker cover gasket.
Nearside mirror head held together with tape.
Inside is good, got all mains leads/water hose & fitting etc with it.
Got to drain down caravan water system asap before frost gets to it.
No waste water tank, hoses just drain to ground.
Has 2 batteries under bonnet, not sure if they are both starter or if one is leisure battery or if it is split charged.
Going to post load more pics later

Wish there was friendly board like this for older transits,transit.org are not that helpful.....

Hi Mike the spare wheel carrier should be at the back If my memory servers me right it is lowererd by a bolt inside the rear doors, normaly they only have one battery which is located on the offside so it looks like you have a leasure battery as well.

Is this to do with split charge???

Should be convulated pipe between filter & exhaust,is this important?

Think indow should have guide for lifter roller attached too bottom of it,if so it is missing.
Also why bodged handle fixing??

Any idea what this is?

Thinking these are holes for spare wheel carrier?

With its own built in fish tank in window....

That looks like an isolator switch, which connects the main battery and second together, It could be that the second battery is for the living area and that you need to put the switch on when the engine is running to charge it up.

The pipe is not that important on the diesel engine.

Plenty of spares available for these trannys, there is even an electric system that you could fit.

They are fridge vents.

The holes look like they where for a cycle carrier.

Why not put some plastic fish in there it would look cool.....

as this is what is known as a chassis cab originaly the spare wheel mount would be removed looks like a psv body in its former life so it wouldnt have carried a spare, the last of the old mk3s in my old work haad teh spares mounted in the luton body, yet my later mk5s had em mounted under slung at the light board

not to step on anybodys toes or get you away from here, but there is a transit forum

http://www.fordtransit.org has specific sections for each mk of transit and theres lots of very knowledgble people on there, bit liek here but CF_UK is wayyyyyyy better

the cill and arch joint on the passenger side looks a little scabby, cills and arches are the death of these vans, so give the whole lot a good going over,

realy cant tell people with wedge shape transits enough youve seen my pics of my mk5........ alot of guys drill a hole in the cill were it curves up to meet the A post and fill it with waxoyl or same like stuff just gives you a bit of re-assurance its solid, i would whip the mk3 mirrors of and fit a set of mk5 ones there bigger and chunkier,

but dont be tempted to do a face lift for a later model of transit

pain in the hoop to get right, noticed in your photos the bumper has been bolted at either side, check teh bottoms of the arches were they attach cos the bumper has started to splay out so means that bolt is pulling thru that wing and could be tearing metal if it hasnt got a big ole washer on it

Thanks for help & advice,Checked underneath & inside sills etc today & all seems fine.
Found small ptch needed in centre of cab floor where gaiter is split and soaked carpet, what is best thing to paint cab foor with after it has been welded & worst of rust cleaned off.
managed to get new gear lever gaiter, but still stuck for channel that fits on bottom of passenger window if anyonr has one.

Going to drain water system & water heater down tomorrow assuming i can work out how lol

just noticed the pic of the top of the windscreen and plastic roof

looks like the roof has corroded right along, thats a windscreen out job and fresh metal, you would probably be better looking for a standard low roof transit and welding it in along the top, the remnants of the original roof should be easy to see from the inside if you remove the headlining in the cab.

Luckily the windscreen surround is ok,so i will kill what rust there is & then a bit of fibreglass matt over joint.
Now had windscreen replaced, new mirrors, floor welded.Screen pillers are fine.Changed gear lever gaiter & blocked holes in bulkhead lol.
All i have to do now is window winder, resistor pack for blower.
Then just tidying until next year.
Well pleased with it tbh.

Got most of them thanx, but cant source a window winder channel, can get a complete window with channel, but too expensive for me at moment.
Done quite a bit on it,done leakoff mod, replaced torque sleeve and turned fueling up a turn.
In proccess on fitting a flamestart/thermostart device at moment, but snow stopped play lol,One off of a tractor fits exactly.Just got to sort wiring for it.
Everything works inside, fitted split charge system., with 2 voltmeters in dash.
Well pleased with it tbh.
Prefer Beddies tho,especially steering!!!!

Not too impressed with Transit.org.
They dont seem to understand that not everyone is an expert & has latest model.

most of the transit forum guys are good blokes, problem is somtimes people
ask the same questions over and over again, and then they get ratty with people when they should just take a pill, is the steering a bit wooly then ?

if you havent already put a wanted add for the channel in the parts wanted section on FTF one of the guys will have what ya need, there is a small divide on there between the different model owners at times but is always tongue in cheek at times, ive been keeping a eye open for that channel but seems to be the mk6 thats breaking at the moment up here

I have had ad running over there but no joy.
Steering is ok,but seems about 100 turns lock to lock lol.
Just discovered that ford still list window channel but whether it is actually available is diferent matter.
I did notice the multiple questions over there, sometimes several times in same thread...
Asked over there what thread i need for oil pressure tpiece as i want to fit guage,no answers at all.
When all is said and done a ford is just a ford, but a Beddie is a character lol.
This has got to be the most helpfull vehicle forum around by far.
Wish there was on like it for transits,FTF is just too big & impersonal.

Well, despite health problems since i got her/him..not picked a name yet but "Hodmadod" seems fairly appropriate lol.
Well pleased so far, sorted out wireing, intslled dual split charge systems with 2 sxtra batteries, twin voltmeters, reversing cam/gps etc.
Installed remote central locking as i find it a stretch to unlock passenger door.
Also lucky find on ebay, brnd new locks set, doors, ignition, fuelcap with same key for all with extra key for £20.00
Done "leak off mod" to injectors, replaced torque sleeve in pump & fitted a "Flamestart" cold start device which works brilliantly.
removed twin seat & replaced with single seat to restore cab access to habitation.
Trying to work out how to check pressures in twin rears at moment????
Managed to finally get window channel, picking it up wednesday.

Still got loads to do but its keeping me occupied, teaching me some new "adult phrases & sayings.Rediscovered how to cut, hit, puncture fingers effortlessly.
Aches in places i had forgotten i had places,& also in places i sure i never had before.......

But you know all about this...you got Beddies...
Well transits are just as (*&^&^%$(*&& in bad.......
