Hi Festival mum ..sounds like your going to have fun with your van & we have't had any trouble with A Bailey yet although i know a few on here aint that keen on him

I wish I hadn't said anything now about AB - he has helped us with the van and been very cool. I had no intention of opening up a debate - sorry AB!

Woke up this morning to it being below freezing in the van - not the best start but a couple of brews and lighting the woodburner has helped! Nice and toasty again now, shame we have to be outside to sort the points this morning before we know we can get moved again - hope she starts - it is v cold here in Linconshire!

Hello Sam & Steve,
Quite envy you sleeping in your van this time of year. Ann and myself try and spend as much time in our van as possible; the majority of our vanning is wild camping. I love the thought of a wood burning stove, did you make it yourself or is it a bought one?

The main problem a lot of us have with him is his rip off prices but no doubt if any of us were in his position we would be the same. He's a businessman and he knows that he has us by the nuts and he's charging to suit. If he would be a bit fairer with prices I'm sure he would get a lot more business from members.

Funny you should say that Greg, Ann did exactly the same and then complained all the way to Edinburgh about the rattling noise.:?

Hair dryers? bottom door seals?? You are a posh lot!!:o

I can see daylight through 3 sides of our door - we call it good ventilation

the wood burner is one of these - and has proved to be worth its weight in gold! Think we got a deal though as we got it from ebay and paid a bit less than the standard asking price! 3 stones of wood lasts a couple of days with it roaring and we cook most of our food on it - we have a gas stove/grill and oven too and can pack the stove down in the summer like this - it weighs less than 10kg and is perfect for our needs!

We deliberated about various pot bellies and gas bottle conversions but decided on this one because you can put it away out of season and free up the space. Other things to consider are the spark guard and how to cap off the chimney. Our spark guard is a ball of wire pressed into the top of the chimney and has worked fine so far, the cap is a Heinz tomato soup can (label removed because we are a bit classy)! haha! Am dying to go to a caravan club and light it!

Hello Sam & Steve,
Thanks for posting the picture. I'm always intrigued at the multitude of designs for wood burning stoves. As Scooby mentioned, from gas bottles to more top of the range cast iron Queenie stoves.
How do you vent it from the van?

we have a pre-exisiting chimeny hole from when the van had a water heater in it, we have used that - not probs with heat at all, the chimney stands about 18inches above the van on the outside. If you can give me some time, I will try and get some pics of it up in situ.

Hello Sam & Steve,
Always wanted a wood burning stove to stick in the awning on the cold nights; as we have a relatively small van and space is at a premium. The sheer dimensions of how much room a wood burning stove would take up, if it's a permanent fixture, is quite considerable.
I like the idea of yours where you can use it as and when.
Another question, do you find a nice, thin residue of soot depositing itself on surfaces?

There is a little bit of dust from the ash but no soot as when the burner is lit is draws everything towards the chimney and out of the van, the door closes tight too so when we don't need as much heat we shut it so that the burner ticks over instead of roaring! the door has 4 settings - wide open = smoke everywhere, door on 1st sneck of the latch = roaring heat, 2nd sneck = not quite so roaring and door closed - slow burn = ideal for night time to keep us going all night - is good practice to stick a log or two in at about 4 am (we usually go to bed about midnight), then the fire is still in in the morning and so it is warm - I didn't wake up last night so it went out and the van temp was in the minuses first thing although the burner only takes about 15 mins before it throws out some heat. Hottest we have had the van was 3 days ago - 32c - way too hot, you'll agree

There is also a damper on the chimney which when we want to fire to burn slow we quarter turn so it is set to half open and if we need the fire to reduce and go out quicker (about 1/2 an hour) we close the damper all the way and shut the door all the way.

Can't recommend it highly enough, the frontier stove is used for disaster relief - was sent to Haiti - and I believe the designer/inventor is contactable for more advice. We did remove the sink and cupboard and the shower and shower tray from the van to fit it in (they are for sale). To me this is not a problem as I never used the shower and have two bowls for washing up/washing etc. We are clean people and have a solar shower/caravan club membership if we need it. I have been living permanently in the van since end of Sept and have not missed the usual facilities. I'd say 'go for it' but I am biased!!

Hello Sam & Steve,
Thanks for getting back to us. Like yourself, we removed the toilet compartment, which included a shower, as we felt that it wasn't required. We have managed by using showers in services, booking into the odd campsite and, we too, have a solar shower and if we're ever caught short there's always good old wet wipes.
Funny you should mention using two bowls, my old grandmother wouldn't take a cup of tea off anybody unless they had two bowls.

Hello

A rather belated welcome. Very interesting to read about your stove. I have spotted that before but never really thought about how useful it would be to have a movable stove rather than a fixed item. i'm toying with the idea of living in my van for a bit after March as the funding for my PhD dries up then but my work will not be finished. Was looking at getting an Eberspacher, but they are very pricey.

enjoy the trip, and I hope you are on the move again soon after your breakdown (seen in another thread)

Eberspacher - mega money - first time I have seen one so have no other comment!

We manage well with our stove and part of the reason we have this one is because we can put it away in the summer. The price was also very good - a fraction of an Eberspacher. As I said in the other thread, I am biased about having a wood burner!
:D

Thanks for the welcome too.
